Living in California . . . how do you justify it?
« on: September 16, 2007, 02:35:13 PM »
I'm thinking of moving back to the west coast, and so I was doing some Cost Of Living comparisons, and was greatly surprised.

i haven't lived on the coast since I was on my own, hence my surprise

i currently live in one of the most affluent towns in the SE . . . and yet, according the COL calculator, it would take me roughly twice as much money to maintain my std of living if I moved to the Bay Area.

Craziness.

but I can justify it . . .  ;D

I prefer the status quo . . . sending Israel the extra cash that you would rather have sent to the projects.  ;)

I now refer to them as inner-city settlements embroiled in the war against gentrification. :)

I grew up in Topanga Canyon which is located in between Mailbu and the Valley.  My dad was physician and my mom made hand-made baby furniture.  I now live in Manhattan Beach.  I have lived here (California) my whole life.  I have been everywhere and would never leave here.  Other places are great to visit but I would never want to live anywhere else.  I'll be in Greece for a month and can't wait to get back home.

Keith lives in Hawaii.  He has been there for quite awhile.  But I read he is moving to Vegas, I think this month.  I like Hawaii but again, just to visit for a couple weeks at a time.  You can only go diving and fishing so much.  I think it would be a great place to retire tough.

I live in South Miami(Cutler Ridge, to be more exact).  Cost of living is high, but with the whole sub-prime lending fall-out, I found a very nice house for rent at a pretty good price.  Yes, I rent down here because cost of new homes is outrageous and I do not use loans.  My wife and I, however, own 3 acres of land in northern Phillippines and I own a condo in Buffalo, NY where cost of living is dirt-cheap.  I currently rent it out to a newly-wed friend of mine.  I own both of my vehicles, and the only debt I have is the credit card I use from time to time, but in reality, I need the credit card because I travel a lot and the hotels often mandate it.  Oh well.

But yea, I never understood the fascination of living next to water and the beach, when the majority who live near the beach don't even go to it.

Not a lot of hotels here that I notice.  I rarely get further east than Highland or PCH.   The Raddison is really nice.  I would stay in Torrance or Marina Del Rey depending on where you are going.

The Marriott in Marina Del Rey is one of the nicest around... I live right around the corner.

Actually I like most Marriotts.  The Oakwood Apts. in Marina Del Rey my uncle was one of the investors back in the 70's.  All I remember is the gym he had built there had one of those machines you sat on and there were rollers underneath that was supposed to roll the fat off you.  Also had one of those shuffleboard games where you slid this chrome disk and the top was wood covered with sawdust.  Back then those apartments were the nicest and biggest complex around.  I saw them about 8 years ago and they didn't look the best anymore.  Are they still there.  An old friend Dr. Stan Walsh has one of those penthouses on top of one of those towers.  I really like Marina Del Rey.  I kind of hang around town now when I'm not traveling.

I'll have to see if they still exist... I've only been in the area about 9 months myself... Is it right off Admiralty? I think it's Fiji Way? In the Marina loop? Or is it in the area close by Washington Blvd heading into Venice?
