Has the smoking ban affected your social life?
« on: September 18, 2007, 08:16:54 AM »
Probably a question more for the British and Irish members I would imagine. But of course anyone can chirp in.

Has the smoking ban had an affect on you or your local? Do you go to the pub more, or less now the ban is in full effect?

I've noticed that there aren't as many of the old faces in my local as there once were. And it's kinda killed the atmosphere off somewhat.

The 'cleaner air' has unmasked some of the more unpleasant aroma's to be found in a boozer. Like urinals and those blocks they put in to try and mask that smell. Farts and armpits are more noticable now too.

Then you've got the city centre boozers and the usual mob that frequent them during the day spewing out onto the pavements for a smoke and throwing their buttends everywhere. There's also a very noticable drop in drinkers at these pubs too.

It's the traditional 'spit and sawdust' pubs that are getting fucked with this ban. It'll be a sad day when these sort of pubs are all gone I tell thee. The winter is going to be a testing time for a lot of boozers I know.

Yeah, attendances are down, but I fucking love the fact I don't have to put up with some cancer patients fumes.

Attendance are actually up, people are generally drinking even more, since they don't have their fags.

I enjoy not smelling like cigarettes after a night out.

The nightclub scene in CA has suffered tremendously...in the bars I play it has anyway. First the DUI crackdown, then smoking, it's all put a damper on people because a majority feel they have to either smoke and/or drink "to the extreme" to have a good time.
I'm all for both of the crackdowns! I hate smokers, no matter if it's a hot chick or not, and drunk drivers are the scum of the earth next to pedophiles and murderers.
But it's indirectly affected a lot of peoples lives, in many different ways.

Pretty soon you'll need a prescription for nicotine/cigarettes.

I see NO PROBLEM with that, IMO. :)

I don't think this thread has gone the way Diesel hoped, I sense he's a chain smoking chimney.

ha ha not quite a chain smoker but I do enjoy a fag with my pint.

Some pubs will do well from the ban. Those that have a good beer garden will do ok. A lot of other pubs where the only option is to smoke on the pavement, will go under for sure.

the smoking ban in san diego and california has been in effect for 10 or 12 years now and initially everyone thought it would kill the bar and tavern business's but it did'nt phase it....

just more people out front and out back ( where rear doors are available) gathered around doing thier thing
