I think some of them actually believe it,  in fact some actually think they are on mission from God.  Imagine that.... ::)

Where on earth would they get such preposterous ideas...

Interesting... so politicians talking to God (praying), that's essential to get votes.

But when God talks back to them, you make fun of them...

No,  nice try C-82.  It seems like you are grasping to find some angle.

I'm talking about God talking to them, not them praying to God.

I make fun of that.

When people pray to god for whatever they pray for it's a personal thing.  I wouldn't make fun of that.....you might, maybe.

As far as getting votes.   America is probably the most religious nation on earth.  When running for office you stand little chance of getting elected if you don't believe in God.   That's just the way it is.

Sorry, too many years at university; an argumentum ad populum simply means 'an argument from popularity' or 'an argument appealing to the people'; the popularity of a claim or belief is not a indication of its truth value.

I spent a few years "at university" and I have never heard or used the phrase "argumentum ad populum."  No one talks like that "at university" (or anywhere else).  Are you from the U.S.?

I wasn't making an argument.  Just stating facts.

Watched the second half of the Democrat debate last night.  The second to last question of the night was "name your favorite Bible verse."

Last question was "Red Sox or Yankees."

I originally hail fom the USA but haven't lived there in some 10 years. I studied Latin but beyond that you should simply google 'argumentum ad populum'...it is very common and has wide spread usage.
I hate the State.

I Googled it.  There are apparently several variations:   appeal to the masses, appeal to belief, appeal to the majority, appeal to the people, argument by consensus, authority of the many, bandwagon fallacy, and tyranny of the majority.  All of those phrases are much less awkward.

1.  Maher is a standup comic.  Just so we're clear on who we're dealing with.

2.  He called everyone who believed in God stupid.

3.  The smartest people in the country and in our history believe in God.  A tiny minority do not.  Religion permeates our society at all levels.

4.  To say a person who believes in God doesn't think for himself is absurd.

I have seen his attitude displayed by many atheists/agnostics.  They can't just believe in nothing.  They have to ridicule the overwhelming majority of the population who disagrees with them.  This was clearly evident when I watched a portion of the atheists national convention.

2. Maher is one of the most astute imntelligient political satirists we have.

3. The most astute politicians in the history of politics all CLAIM to believe in God. Whether they actually do is debateable.

4. And you claim to be any better? You're not a mod on this board, so I'll just assume that if one backs up to the beginning of this thread, your hypocrisy is still there for the world to see.  ;)

::)  Yes, I consider the standup comic "imntelligient" too.  Not "debateable" at all.  Troll.

Not saying that Trapezkerl is one of these people, but I have heard a couple of professors say that most people who throw Latin words into a debate, discussion or casual conversation for no reason are simply trying to appear more educated and intelligent than they really are.    ;D

That has been my experience.

Not.  Beach Bum also speaks pig latin, the language of his children.  For example, agj is upidstay.   :)
