Help me with a new Protein supplement for dieting..
« on: October 02, 2007, 06:16:56 PM »
So i just blew through another tub of designer protein...ive been using this forever and i like it but im sure there are better protein powders out there, im just not up to speed with them as some of you are.

Any reccomendations? Im dieting so it has to be pure protein. I think designer is about 16g per scoop, and I take x2 scoops a serving so 32g per serving...

Thanks

:o Goddamn, 32g protein per TWO scoops?  I hope that scoop is as big as a dime!!  Honestly, you should be eating more whole food protein, especially on a cut.  If you're looking for WPI though, the best, IMO, is Ipro (exactly GF pro without the SDBP) and you can find it at Giant Nutrition.

Designer is one of those powders that has been tested to consistently have in it what it says on the label.  It tastes pretty good too.  A bit pricey.  Optimum is another one you might want to try.

you could always buy a few tubs from different brands, might not be a big difference in quality but it's good to try out a few other flavors not to get bored with it... only differences i go for is whey during the day and casein before bed as it's suppose to digest slower... not sure in reality it makes much of a difference though... others suggest that a mix of whey and casein after training is better than whey alone.

Yeah spot on, I like to try some others from time to time and see how they taste and how I feel after taking them.

In the real world of the average Joe, the differences are negligible.  Too many people try to micro manage.

I've tried most of these Protein shakes on the market, my observations are:

1) Fuck MuscleTech, they are overpriced for all their supplements, not just protein shakes

2)For whey protein, i used to getthe Myoplex, damn they taste sooooooo good but if i rememeber correctly, each pack had like 50g of carb, so i havent been having those in a long time. For the past 3 years, i've been buying Higher Power Protein Powder from BB... the price is very reasonable, and the taste is amazing compared to most of the crap out there.  I see optimum nutrition being the highest selling protein powder, but i cant stand the taste of it..Higher Power protein has ( i think) 22g of protein and 2-3g of carb.

3) The best casein protein in terms of cost and taste is by far  Matrix 5.0. The teaste is amazing IMO, specially imagine having 2-3 scoops everyday for the next 10 yrs whatever... its been 3 yrs for me and the taste is still good... Trust me i have tried some other stuff out therewhich i seriously would gag after 3-4 weeks, the taste just gets old....

I'm sure there are a lot of people that will disagree with me, but from my personal experience I don't think that protein powders do anything.  You're better off sticking with lean, high-protein food, not powders.

Go with the cheapest protein that doesn't tear up your stomach.  If you're on a high protein diet, the type of protein you take will have little difference.

BLENDS: Whey and usually some of the following, Milk (casein, isolate, etc), EGG, Soy. Digest slower, good for before bed or with meals during day.

WHEY: Isolate, Hydrolyzed and Concentrates. Cheaper=concentrates (optimum), purest=Isolates(especially if lactose intollerant), Designer=Hydrolyzed(most expensive of the three)....Whey is perfect for post workout because of fast digestion. Some products have all three types

I use Elite Whey and American Whey...the elite is a better quality isolate but with prices so expensive american whey is definately afforable. Both are well priced on most sites out there, but I personally use conditionnutrition.com since they have always seemed to have the protein in stock.  I dont get some email that tells me that my order is on hold because half of it is out of stock...

32g in two scoops? Yes Designer Whey is a little behind on the times.

If you are cutting I would recommend a premium whey protein isolate. Very pure, little to no carbs or fat and around 30g+ protein per scoop.

Some of the best ones I have tried are:

Iso-Gold by PVL
Iso-Pro by Precision
Iso-Whey by Interactive
Pro-ISL by Strive

My suggestion would be to look for a company that does quality control testing (like PVL) or manufactures their supplements in a quality control facility (like Precision, Interactive and Strive)
