Elisha Is Jeered

 23 From there Elisha went up to Bethel. As he was walking along the road, some youths came out of the town and jeered at him. "Go on up, you baldhead!" they said. "Go on up, you baldhead!" 24 He turned around, looked at them and called down a curse on them in the name of the LORD. Then two bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the youths. 25 And he went on to Mount Carmel and from there returned to Samaria.

Man, those prophets sure were hyper-sensitive about their male pattern baldness.

The Bible (Old Testament) ranges from man with a thousand wives, to woman eating her child to thirteen foot giants, to the earth stopping from turning for 24 hours, to woman driving a tent peg into some guys tempo, to 900 year old humans, to man with twelve fingers and toes, to man killing a thousand men with a donkey's jaw bone, to man in forest with no clothe on for three years, to serpents and donkey's talking, to seas parting, to human killing lions, to walls cities callapsing to the sound of a trumpet, to woman turning into a pillar of salt, battles and famines are common, siblings killing siblings are common, getting your eyes poked out are common, and don't forget the flood.

Do I believe all this?   Yes

Do I think its weird?    yes

It's hardly weird, once you understand the context of the scenario.

Perhaps, you should ask yourself why a bunch of youths would go to the outskirts of a city, just to pick on a guy for being bald.

In ancient times, the Israelites sometimes shaved their heads, when in mourning. It appears that Elisha was doing such, with regards to the loss of his mentor, Elijah. Those youths, telling Elisha to "Go up" were mocking him, referring to the ascenion of Elijah.

Those youths knew who Elisha was (and who trained him as a prophet). Furthermore, the passage states that the bears mauled 42 of them. That would mean there were even more of them; let's say 100, for simplicity's sake. So, this group is confronting Elisha, with bad intentions for him. Why? Just because he's bald? I doubt it!!!

I'd say (based on the area in which this occurred) that these youths were apprentices of the prophets of Baal, the same prophets that LOST in a showdown with Elijah, which would explain why they had beef with Elisha. When you're outnumbered at least 42 to 1, having two ferocious she-bears come to your aid is pretty good business.

This the degree with which people had to contend with in those days, absolutely terrible horrifying time and that make are day and age seem like kindergarden and to think that someone in those day would write fairytales in the Bible for amusement is absolutely ridiculous.
