 This is accurate. Out of every 100 guys from the military police who apply for the BOPE, only 3 pass all the tests. Think about what this means: out of 100 tough guys, only 3 are tough enough to join it. Here is what those guys have to do in their training to get their black uniform with the skull in it:

 - Withstand 5 days without sleep. If you fall asleep, you're out.

 - Survive a whole night in near freezing water - several have died of hypothermia.

 - Survive up to 1 month in the woods eating bugs and roots.

 - Ride 100 kilometers on horseback and then withstand a whole day without being able to sit the next day - with your back fucked up and all.

 - Climb a 1000 meters high mountain with no equipment and with a 50 lbs bag of rocks on your back.

 - Be able to run 10 miles on bare feet over rocky soil in 1 hour.

 - Walk 50 miles with a 50 lbs bag or rocks on your back.

 - Get through a 3 minutes knife fight without getting a single cut to your body - if the intructor manages to cut you even slightly, you're out.

 - Give 1000 shots in 1 hour to a target located 100 feet away - if you miss even one shot, you're out.

 - Withstand 12 minutes of beating from 3 guys - the only way for them to stop beating you is for you to ask to quit - in which case you're out -, otherwise they will keep beating you until the 12 minutes are over or you're dead. 4 have died so far in this part because they refused to ask to quit. A guy I know sustained 3 broken ribs, a puntured lung, a bleeding eye(the capillaries of his cornea exploded) and a concussion and he spent the next 3 weeks in a hospital ICU, but he did get his black burette.

  A military observer from the U.S Marine Corps deemed the training "inhumane" and said that such training in the U.S would result in a lawsuit. The BOPE is not like an American SWAT, in the sense that the SWAT is still a police force expected to uphold the law and trained to arrest the criminals, while the "BOPE" has a military mentality: their goal is to kill the enemy. Furthermore, the armament of the BOPE is much heavier than that of the SWAT, consisting of grenades, anti-air weapons, .50 machine guns, armored vehicles, bazookas and mortars. They are regarded as the best urban combat unit in the World. they are so good, in fact, that there are currently 3 military advisors from the BOPE teaching the U.S army how to do better urban warfare in Iraq.

  Guys, if you want to see a really, really, really manly film, then you can't miss "Elite Squad", which will come out in the U.S in January next year. The film is the real story of a captain of the "Bope", the elite unit of the military police in Rio de Janeiro. He wants to quit because his son is about to be born and he wants him to have a dad. The plot revolves around him trying to find a substitute for his position.

  The "Bope" is considered the best urban combat unit in the World. It is so good, in fact, that advisors from the 'Bope" are giving training to American forces in Iraq about how to fight urban warfare. It is not like the SWAT, but more like a real military unit of the police created not to arrrest, but to exterminate the drug dealers. Their mentality is military: to kill the enemy. Thye were featured in the 2005 documentary "Wardogs". They are known as the "Black Skulls" because they wear black burettes and their symbol is a skull with a kniife sticking in it. HAHAHA, the movie is good but dont exagerate, there isnt so much violence in it, even because here in brazil it shows on the big theaters and the usual audience here dont want to see too much violence....
 The movie is based (sp?) on book that was writen 10 years ago...so the reality of Bope is not exactly like that anymore....But yeah, they are a 'kick ass' group, sort of speak...
 But all things aside, the movie is very good, i think many of you guys would like it

Jokes aside, if you wanna taste a really good movie, go to the theater and WATCH this movie! You guys WILL NOT REGRET, trust me.

I live in Brazil and this movie is the biggest craze at the moment, here. The director of the movie, Jose Padilla, had his crew kidnapped in one of the slums during the shooting of a scene. The druglords of the favelas wanted to steal the guns used in the movie , because they thought they were for real. This movie is no Mr. Myiagi shit, Van Bilderass, trust me. It's the best reality/police movie I have ever read. You guys have never experienced a role in a movie like the one of Captain Nascimento, the main character of the movie.
It showcases how rotten the regular police in the big cities in the world have become, because of the dirt, corruption and government abandon. Only a special elite force could handle the task of trying to keep up with the ever growing power of drug underworld and go for their heads. Brutal scenes of torture.
