Six New York City police officers are under investigation for possibly obtaining anabolic steroids improperly, police said late Tuesday night.
"We don't expect to arrest anybody," Deputy Police Commissioner Paul J. Browne said in an interview with Newsday. "We're looking at this as a possible case in which steroids were taken for personal use. These officers will be subject to disciplinary action, not arrest."
Browne issued a statement Tuesday night following a report on CW11 that Brown said was "wildly distorted and exaggerated the facts" pertaining to the departments Internal Affairs Bureau investigation.
The report said sources indicated 30 police officers from Brooklyn and Staten Island precincts were being arrested in connection with a steroid ring.
Police said a pharmacy employee at Lowen's Pharmacy in Bay Ridge was arrested Tuesday in connection with the investigation.
A raid of the pharmacy in May is connected to the criminal investigation of an Orlando company that was raided in February. Five people who operated that clinic have been indicted on felony charges in Albany, according to the Albany Times-Union newspaper.
Investigators went through a prescriber list and found a number of customers worked for the police department either as cops or civilians, police said. Of that list, investigators determined that six deserved a further look.
