Question for Bob Chic - Do the fans matter?
« on: October 19, 2007, 05:00:48 AM »
Bob..honest question.

Do the fans of BB matter?

what I mean is when there is a situation like we seem to have right now-almost universal upset over the olympia and the direction the sport is headed and has been headed for along time now...does our opinion as fans really matter to the IFBB and the judges in general?

Now I've been following BB along time and it seems to me that the general rule of thumb among pro's and IFBB officials is that the fans are nice but generally they really don't know a thing about judging or anything along those lines, I can't tell you how many times a pro has almost flat out said "you really don't know shit"..maybe not in those words but that's pretty much it.

Now I might be wrong but from what I understand our good buddy steve w.-I do not know how to spell his last name and dont' care to look it up-is a judge that's on most big shows judging panels, he seems like a really headstrong guy who in general doesn't take any shit from anyone, I get the impression that he's gonna keep on judging a show how he's gonna judge it pretty much no matter what, so if the IFBB straight up says "we're gonna have to change the way we do things" like they have in the past is someone like this gonna abide by the new rules?  I've heard for years that there are mandates about guts and the like but in reality Ronnie's gut has been horrible for along time and he was mr. olympia, so how far do these "mandates" really go?

If someone judges a show and there is universal disapproval for who won, does it matter?

nah, getbig is comprised of the most dedicated bodybuilding fans in the world.  And we're called the 'peanut gallery' and Bob has said we're not real fans unless we fly across the country and attend a show.

I can imagine Peyton Manning crapping on fans in NV or Maine cause they can't make it to an Indy game in person.  Ha!

yeah, I know.  I just thought I'd throw it out there and see what he said.  let's face it the fans make or break this "sport" and if we-the people who take time out of thier day to discuss this stuff-are not happy with the direction things are going shouldn't that be looked at?  I know guys like Steve W, and maybe I am picking on him but I just keep on seeing him standing up and yelling at fans who booed the results of a show a few years ago..anyway, the judges think they know what's best for the sport but if everyone but them thinks there is a problem doesn't that say something?

LOL....good question :)

Here's the short answer...

The fans matter up to the point where they buy tickets for the shows and buy supplements/magazines....THAT'S IT!!!  Anything else, just shut the f*** up and deal with it.  ;)

Now have a nice day  ;D

but really....the "sport" was way better off in the early 90's as far as people watching it, it actually being on TV, exposure and all that other stuff.  People have not liked the way things are for awhile and I think it's actually reaching a point where people are gonna become less and less involved as far as buying magazines and going to pro shows so doesn't that say something?

True.  But according to our current Mr Olympia, "thank God the fans aren't judges" i.e. "buy the tickets, buy muscletech products and shut the F*** up!"  ;)

I am sure Bob Chic can speak for himself, however, I don't think you get his point or realize what is going on here in terms of fans and shows.

The recent Olympia was reprted to be a sell out crowd for the finals. Thus, despite any complaints, if the show keeps drawing fans at the actual event, it will keep sponsers and is no position to change.

I have always ATTENDED and bought tickets to pro events I prefered MORE than the Olympia.

I got 2 VIP tickets each of the 2 yrs the GNC pro show was here in N Atlanta. It lasted 2 years however and went belly up for whatever reason(s). I enjoyed the Colorado Pro , but have learned from Ron's post that the show is now in trouble due to the title sponser pulling out.

I support top natural shows, but find I am in the minority and many don't go to any show called "natural". (However the atlanta based SNBF has sold out the last 2 events, so who knows?)

The Olympia and ASC have always do well however. If the other events and formats were the same draw the fans could force a change via economic means. It may be that many real, hardcore fans, just don't have the financial means to support the show, buy VIP tickets and travel to events, etc.

Pro football and baseball get big bucks for season tickets and sky boxes.

like i said before: the judges have proved time after time that they are a non factor because they cant and wont judge the physiques..they go by name recognition and bb politics.

nowdays its the fans who decide who wins or not.

that's all well and good but do the judges look at something like this - the reaction to the olympia decision and react to it or is it business as usual?

I can see someone making an argument for Dexter, Vic, Dennis, Even Melvin being Mr. Olympia, but I cant think of one judgeing criteria that would put culter in 1st.

i'll save you the effort

Bob is an AMI employee
Jay has an AMI contract
Victor has an MD contract
AMI/Bob don't like MD

Bob thinks Jay beat Victor fair and square for the mr. olympia title

Put these two together

"Joe Weiders Flex Magazine"

"Joe Weiders Olympia"

You can put Jay and Ronnie on Flex covers. Not Wolf, not Dex, not Victor.

Them being Mr Olympia would feed the pockets of MD with Flex's (again, Weider mag) change.

Fans do matter. They voice their opinions at the shows, and on various boards. Of course, with Jay winning the Olympia this year, not at his best, there is an outcry and everyone listens. Whether or not they agree with it something different. It will be interesting to hear what Chick has to say in terms of Jay winning the contest.

Whenever it is close, there will always be a lot of people who don't agree with the decision. Like this year, it occured at the Mr. O contest when Flex should of beat Ronnie in 1998. Or Kevin should of beat Ronnie in 2002. Or even Jay should of beat Ronnie in 2001.  In each of these results, there was an outcry by fans who voiced their displeasure.

We should remember that not all of the judges voted for Jay in first place. It was very close.

I don't think they matter at all.

They didn't matter with women's bodybuilding
They didn't matter with figure/fitness

And they don't matter with Men's Bodybuilding.  I think it's more than Jay being Mr. Olympia.  the physiques look TERRIBLE.  Fans of BODYBUILDING hate what's being brought to the table.

Those who were around in the 70's through the 90's are disgusted by this mess, and don't attend shows anymore.  Those who are simply impressed by mass like the Jay Cutlers of the world.

I cna tell you first hand as judge of many years , that when it is close, the final call is always controversial.
Bodybuilding is pretty subjective and this years call would have lots of naysayers no matter who won among the top guys.

honestly, Ron - come on

just because Muscletech Muscle Asylum bought getbig doesn't mean you have to tow the company line
