We call it growth hormone. It is very new to the body.
Since it has only been produced by the pituitary gland for a few years, not the entire length of human evolution, science has little information on its actions.
It's a very unique hormone. NO ONE in history has ever had a pituitary hormone that caused excessive growth hormone production. There aren't even terms such as giantism or acromegaly to define this phenomenon.
And, since humans haven't produced growth hormone since the origins of our existence, and there have never been any humans who produced excess amounts of this hormone, we have almost no case studies of its effects.
In fact, I don't think GH has even been isolated as a peptide hormone to allow its effects to be studied.
We know nothing about what it does. Scary indeed.
