Um... why don't people actually learn how to play a guitar?

Yeah.
So people spend ridiculous hours playing a video game when they could learn to do the real thing?
I guess since I actually a guitar player, I will never understand.
I hate that fuckin' game.

Agreed.
Try learning one of Alexi Laiho's solos, or Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Yngwie, etc.
Guitar hero pisses me off.
Everytime now I get asked about playing guitar, it always seems like an excuse for people to say " Yeah man, I know, I play Guitar Hero all the time"
Stupid fucks.

Be cause the learning curve is smaller and it gives you a sense of achievment when you can do what oyu want that fast. How many people don't bodybuild because it is too hard or takes too long?

You are not alone.
I play myself, and get far more enjoyment out of it, than I would playing the game, I think. My neighbor has GH3 and I've been meaning to go check it out, because I really don't even understand the concept of it, or how to play along.

why don't people battle aliens or race cars in downtown tokyo?

i play guitar and have guitar hero 2 and 3.  why?  because it's fun, and it's a GAME.  you know, something you PLAY with.

and as someone mentioned, the learning curve alone is 1/100th the time, if that.  plus, most people don't want to put a thousand dollars plus into a DECENT guitar set up, but many already have an xbox and would like to find another way to pass the time.

If you know how to play correctly, then a $200 Yamaha guitar will sound just as good as a Gibson Les Paul. But, I've argued this a billion times-to the end of the earth, and people do not understand it.
The learning curve- that's what makes anything worthwhile....;)

you know as well as i do that there's a huge difference in sound between a 200 dollar yamaha and a les paul.  maybe if they're both plugged into a 15W crate , then yeah :D

so we need a good guitar (with good pickups) a good amp, good effects, etc.

one example i'll give you before you use it on me is jack white.  he plays a guitar that used to sell at Sears 20 years ago for 40 dollars.  but you know as well as i do that he runs it through 2000 dollars of pedals before letting it go out on a vintage Orange amp.  so  the cheap guitar trick is only half the equation.

so 100 dollars on mindless entertainment such as guitar hero 3 is worth it.  now, if you show me someone who says they're the next steve vai if they beat rock and roll coochie koo on guitar hero...well, i'll beat him down with you  ;D

1951 Gibson ES-350
'63 Epiphone Riviera
98' 58 Gibson 335 Reissue
98 56 Gold Top Reissue
Custom made Strat with 55 Fender strat pickups (re-wound originals)

In the past I've had many others...I've played pretty much every type of guitar out there. For the style I play, the above is what suits me.
Again, I'm not going to argue further, but if you don't understand that a lot of the tone of the guitar comes from the hands- then you should rethink things about playing.
A friend of mine, plays a very well desired (by numerous guitar collectors of the WORLD) 1960 Strat, through a 65 Fender Super Reverb. His tone is horrible, even though that particular rig he's playing is worth about 20k+. Another buddy of mine, that just moved to Oregon, plays a Sears Silvertone guitar- the one that came with the amp in case, but he doesn't use that amp- through a Peavey solid state amp and that cheap p.o.s. Sears guitar has .9's on it!!! Altogether it's maybe $500 worth of gear. But the latter sounds like he's playing through a much better rig.
9 out of ten players can't tell the difference between rigs if they're blindfolded.

I don't know if your talking to me... but about 70% of your Tone comes from your fingers.
Again Im not going to talk shit because none of you have heard my playing.
But let me tell you, I didn't throw money at a setup to get tone.
I have played through just about every amp/guitar combo possible before I settled on what I have.
BTW, The strings I use are 11-60's.
I play blues, classic rock, metal, metalcore, thrash, etc.
I'm 22 and have been playing since I was 6.
Trumpet, trombone, piano, saxophone, guitar, bass, drums, etc.
I know tone. And you couldn't pay me to play through a Fender Super Reverb. Just because it's sought after by collectors does NOT mean it's a good sounding amp.
Collector equipment is worthless to a PLAYER.

Depends on the style of music you're playing. If you're playing Metallica, of course you don't use a Super. If you're playing blues, you do not play a Marshall stack with 30 different kinds of effects. All in the style, and the style within a style. SRV played harder blues than Muddy Waters, hence the reason for his Marshalls and wah wah pedals. But Muddy plugged straight in the amp with nothing but his Tele and a slide. Muddy, one night was to play a friend of mines Strat and nobody (in the band, and recent friends) ever heard him play anything aside from his Tele for the last 20 years. Yet, when Muddy picked up the Strat and plugged it into a silverface Super Reverb with a master volume control (read: Horrible amp) it sounded like...Muddy Waters.
I've been playing for 18 years, since I was 12.
Just like you are not knocking anyone else's playing, I'm not knocking yours. We've never heard one another. But to make such a pedantic remark like collectors equipment is not for a player, that's just an archaic way to think.
Bottom line, if you hear a sound in your head, you can get it on anything. That's not to say that you can sound like Yngwie while playing a Pignose amp. There are certain factors involved, such as style and venue...bleeding ears and such.....

I run along the lines of Clapton. I don't believe in effects.
The sound coming from the players hands into the guitar into the amp are what creates magic.
But im old school like that. Im sorry, but I don't believe in collector gear, because thats not the sound Im looking for. I couldn't care less about the tone of a fender silverface, because I'm not looking for the "perfect clean tone"
I look for a sound that has life, balls, still has enough mids to make it roar, with a shimmer and defined clarity thats lets every note shine through.
I'm a firm believer in SISO.
Shit in, Shit Out.
But Im a far more technical player, so thats just me.
