Lou Dobbs: Independent Will Win in Nov.

I doubt this will happen.  The time is right, given how weak the field is, but it's too late in the game.  The person would have to be extremely wealthy, get on the ballot in all 50 states, and spend a ton of money.  I don't think there is enough time with the primaries right around the corner.

Lou Dobbs: Independent Will Win in Nov.

CNN’s Lou Dobbs says Americans are in for a “November surprise” next year – voters will elect as president an independent candidate who has not yet entered the race.

The host of “Lou Dobbs Tonight” writes in an online commentary: “One year from now, we will have elected a new president. As eager as I am for that reality, I can’t imagine any one of the current candidates for their party’s nomination being chosen by the American people to lead this nation for the next four years.

“I believe the person elected a year from now will be an independent populist, a man or woman who understands the genius of this country lies in the hearts and minds of its people and not in the prerogatives and power of its elites.”

Dobbs, whose new book is “Independents Day: Awakening the American Spirit,” goes on to say: “I believe that independent Americans will demand a far better choice than any of the candidates now seeking their party’s nomination. I believe next November’s surprise will be the election of a man or woman of great character, vision and accomplishment, a candidate who has not yet entered the race.”

Interestingly, one independent who has been mentioned as a possible presidential candidate is Dobbs himself. A Web site, Lou Dobbs for President, has been spearheading a move to draft the veteran newsman as a presidential candidate in 2008.

The site showed for a time the front page of Newsmax Magazine’s March issue, which featured a cover story about Dobbs, along with this quote from Newsmax’s exclusive interview with the journalist who is on a self-proclaimed crusade to protect America’s borders and jobs:

“I think something on the order of an independent movement will come if these two parties fail the American people again.”

One prominent figure who has been mentioned as a potential independent candidate is New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. He has repeatedly said he does not intend to enter the race, but as Newsmax reported earlier, he is still said to be seriously considering a bids.

Bloomberg has already changed his party affiliation from Republican to independent. And as recently as Oct. 24, two-time presidential candidate Steve Forbes predicted that former vice president Al Gore will endorse Bloomberg for an independent White House bid – and Bloomberg will return the favor by naming Gore his running mate.

Dobbs' CNN contract requires he not endorse anyone.

My belief is that he's dying for a Bloomberg-Hagel ticket.

This is quite possible, when you consider what just happened in NJ.  The vote to approve funding for embryonic stem cell research was supposed to be a "slam-dunk", but it was voted down!  Word is the gov. of NJ was pissed, because he had pumped alot of his own money behind the lobby effort.

So with that, I'm not going to be surprised if we see an independent candidate.

the primaries coming up would more effect a dem or rep entering late.  If an independent enters soon here, he's got plenty of time to get on the ballots and run.  I've been saying for a long time now that this year is an independent's greatest chance to win.  If Ron Paul went independent, he would stand an excellent chance.  Someone mentioned Hagel...  I have thought for some time that they were lining him up.  I found it odd that of all the people who attacked Bush constantly, he pretty much had a free pass compared to others.   Hagel has stated that he wouldn't go independent.  We'll see, we'll see...  One thing is for sure beach... Ron Paul has made more of a mark than you earlier gave him credit for.

ron paul might be using the repub name to get all the debate coverage (access to fix viewers) and donations.

If he decided to go Independent tomorrow, there would be a lot of coverage on it.  A bloomberg or Hagel might JUMP at the chance to attach to his campaign

One of the reasons I think the primaries are important for a third party candidate is all of the media attention the candidates and eventual nominees receive during that process.  I doubt an independent can arrive in the middle of that process, or after, and gain enough momentum to win.  Getting on the ballot in all 50 states is very difficult too.

Ron Paul has made a mark, but has anything really changed?  Is he polling higher than 2 percent?  He has gotten a lot of hype lately, but if he isn't swaying likely voters then he's pretty much jogging in place.

Yes, he has gained in the polls and the numbers might be very misleading... I'm betting he brings a pretty huge new bandwaggon of newly registered republicans to vote.  I would bet that he garners much higher than 2 percent in the primary.  If he loses, he may very well listen to his supporters and go independent where he would grab even more considering the amount who are digruntled with both parties.

He's earned $7.6 million this quarter and isn't yet running commercials and blowing $ like the others.

He's a little crazy, he's fearless, and he has 7.6 million to spend.

He could buy an hour of airtime on every channel in Iowa the week before the caucus and spend 60 minutes owning each candidate, one by one, if he so wanted lol...

Or he could put $7.6 million into a good commercial campaign.

I dont know much about him, other than he is an anti-war republican, the only one.  But HALF of our country is republicans.  And if the other candidates split up the "pro-war" republican votes... but Ron paul gets ALL of the anti-war republican vote... he could do well
