Poe was useless when using drugs.  He would stop writing altogether.  Only when he was writing was he drug-free.  He talks about this a lot in his essays.

Where is your evidence that drug usage helped spawn any great work?  I would like to see the evidence.  Jim Morrison was way better sober.  In fact, he had to be carried off stage a few times. Many fans even walked out as the music was muddled and his lyrics were incoherent.
