Where is Al and Jesse?
« on: December 10, 2007, 05:08:08 PM »
When I first heard about the ref that called the NFL player a "BOY",the first thought that came to my mind is "God please don't let this man be white".

Now all I can think is what has happened to the Ref?

Did it just get brushed under the rug?

Isnt the term BOY a insult to blacks shouldn't black leaders be stepping up asking for this man too be fired or boycotting the NFL?

Or does it only count as a offense if someone white says it?

If a person of color calls another person a racial slure it is ok  ::)

In the eyes of some of course , not all.

I think this guy should get some kind of punishment, refs should be more professional no matter what the players bark at them

I just know this thing would have been a mega issue if he was white

im surprised that this thread took so long..

the reference to  "boy" as the referee is accused of using wasnt a racial epithet is what a few black personalities on espn are saying and i agree. i heard Mike Tirico and Steven A. Smith both say something along those lines. the "boy" reference was more of a seniority remark being that the black ref was much older than the black player. in certain cultures this is normal, mine included. when a much older person is giving you advice and you refuse to listen due to whatever reason the elder/wiser one often calls you "boy" in a stern way signifing that he is infact older and wiser. this was in no manner meant to be a racial slur towards the player. if anything the ref failed to realize that he was speaking to a person from a vastly different generation.
you can also relate this to an old white man referring to much younger and ignorant white boy as "son", even though they are not family. as in "look son!"
"boy" and "son" can be substituted...also the ref did play in the NFL.

Point blank-if this ref was white he would be fired, the NAACP and Sharpton would be up his ass and we would be having a much livelier discussion. :)

no you dont understand what im saying. your argument is that the slur was a derogatory one based on race, that isnt the case. the term used had nothing to do with race.

if youre arguing that it was simply unprofessional then yes, i agree with you it was unprofessional. but thats not what your are stating. your argument is based on race.

and btw TomCat your jump to assumption that this was a racial slur meant to be derogatory is very similar to Jesse and Al Sharpton jumping on the Duke players and accusing them of rape. when in fact that wasnt the case.
in fact the term used wasnt what you had in mind at all.

My point is that why are their double standards?  "Boy" said by a white dude refers to racism and Jim Crow but if used between two blacks sends them back to the cotton fields on a equal playing field?  Give me a break.  That term is demeaning and frankly stupid in general unless used by a father to a son.  Funny how when hypocrisy is mentioned the black community cites "culture" as the reason for word usage.

oh funny you bring up the duke players, did Al or Jesse say sorry to them and there families for all the sensless trouble they caused them?

My argument is that they should treat this the same way no matter what, whether its a mentor thing which is completely stupid by the way,or a race thing he should be punished and he wont be because he is black!!!!!

**thats not a double standard if the term used wasnt racist!**

**racism had nothing to do with the situation!**

people assumed it was a racist remark before the entire story was out, just like Al and Jesse assumed the white boys did rape the stripper and assumed it would be racial injustice if nothing was done.

But used in the same context by a white dude it would be racist.  Explain that.

do you guys even see that you brought racism into a situation where racism didnt even exist.

Answer the question unless you are afraid to.  It's a matter of discussion not a matter of fact.  Why is this situation, racist or not, appropriate in your mind?  Answer both while you're at it.

ok, yes if a white person used the word "boy" towards a black person it would be racist.
just as any other racial slur.

and if a black person uses the word "cracker" towards a white person that would be racists.

did you really need that explanation?

answer me this, why do you feel it necessary to bring racism into a situation where it never even existed?

this discussion for me was about two issue in my mind.

one where is Jess and Al and all the rest of the blacks condemming what this ref said(whether it was racist or not it was still demeaning to a grown man)

second:total double standard whether a white man says it or a black man it should be the same punishment no matter what!!!

You still need to answer my other question.  Why is the statement appropriate in its context?

My point, along with Tomcat, is that this should not be acceptable no matter who says it.  BTW, as far as PC America is concerned, cracker isn't racist.

reread your original post , Tomcat. you were confident that the ref used the word as a racist remark. now you say it doesnt matter if it was a racist remark? make up your mind, and i'll ask you the same question, why are you so eager to bring racism into a situation where it never existed?
