i remember reading an article a few years ago, and the article dealt with the long-term results of a study to determine the correlation between bmi and risk of heart disease, and basically the article's conclusion was that if your bmi is above 23 your risk for heart disease is increased irregardless of body comp

lol....we're all going to die ;D ;D,. Maybe they should create a different guidelines and categorize things in different order. Because this chart generalize every fcking thing into one and it is argueable. not many people is supporting it. Have you ever taken a physical, and the doctor come out of his office and said that everything is fine except that you need to loose weight, because, according to my chart, you're a fcking Pig. loosing your hard earned Muscle is no fun.

Im 29. Though i have very very ligh bones and look much heavier than i am.

The BMI sucks fails to take into account muscle mass bone density etc etc...load of nonsense.

BMI is not nonsense. It does exactly what it was intended to do - provide a means of categorizing weight densities for the average person.

I'm 5'8" and only 173, but I'm overweight.  My last set of skinfold measurements had me at about 11% bf.  Blood pressure 110/69 at last checkup, normal cholesterol.  BMI doesn't mean shit.

I got my bodyfat % done yesterday, I"m at 10.0%

The body mass index was measured too, but I really didn't pay attention to it.

10%?  Good improvement, the last pics from the Mr Getbig probably had you at a good 13-15%.  Did you do skinfolds, biometrical impedence, or something else to measure the number?  You have abs yet?

I'm actually trying to gain weight, eating 3000+ calories a day at 173 pounds or so.  They used a little pincher and machine and asked a bunch of Qs as well.  I don't think I'm that low, but when I train arms now, veins shoot out everywhere.  I didn't see a single vein in my arm for 5 years before this haha...

here's a cell phone garage pic from the 240 Garage Classic 2007.

Eyeballing it, I'd put you in the ~12% range, but it could depend on how much fat you store in your lower body as well.  At 10% you should be able to see rather clearly each individual part of the abdominals if you store your fat proportionally.

As a side note, looks like your chest has come up a shitload since the often-photoshopped "nudie most-muscular" from a while back.

Yes, but the problem comes in when uninformed people try to apply it universally (i.e.  health insurance, military weight limits, etc.) without understanding its limitations.  It's intended to aproximate bodyfat percentage based on simple measures like height and weight.  It does a pretty good job of this on most "normal" people.  However, in weight-training athletes, it fails to differentiate between muscle and fat, placing a 200-lb 5'10" guy in the same health category whether he's 10% bf or 40% bf.  It's very easy for a natural weight-trainer to be classified as overweight or obese while having an average or below-average level of body fat.

All BMI does is assess health risk...if your 5'9", 230 lean lbs you're probably juicing, which can increase health risk.

I got this from http://nhlbisupport.com/bmi/, here are some of the risk's associated w/ a high BMI, and a lot of these are also risks associated w/ steriod use, I'd be willing to bet $ that it's very accurate.

high blood pressure (hypertension)
high LDL-cholesterol ("bad" cholesterol)
low HDL-cholesterol ("good" cholesterol)
high triglycerides
high blood glucose (sugar)

When I was juicing I had all of these except the high blood glucose...it was way accurate for me.

According to BMI, at 5'9", anyone 169 lbs+ is "overweight", and anyone 203 lbs+ is "obese".   Your example may be valid for a 230-lb juicer, but not so much for a 205-lb off-season natural at 15%bf.
