Yeah, there's something about Arnold's shape, more than his size, that just looks spot-on. I still think he would've benefited greatly from an inch or two on his calves, but ya can't point to an ugly-shaped muscle, or say his ... muscle doesn't look right alogside his ... muscles.

Most BBers have something you can single out as not-great. Frank Zane's scrawny calves, Dickerson's tiny arms, Platz's ordinary upper body (relative to legs), Katz's fantastic chest on an otherwise unspectacular (although huge) upper body, Ferrigno's relatively poor calves, Mentzer's forearms somewhat diminishing his upper arms.

Jumping ahead to contemporary BBers, Ron had high calves, Ruhl's triceps look a little flat in comparison to his biceps peaks, Badel is too blocky, and Cutler IYAM is just an amorphous mess.

Like I said before, it's difficult to see a flaw in the top-form Schwarzenegger.

...

Pollux, I saw that guy before, but I didn't realise he was Marnul. I first heard of Marnul in Arnold: The Education... then a little more from Wendy Leigh. Spinning around Graz in yellow denims (or was it white?) and driving a little sports car.

He sounds like a guy who saw the importance of fun! What is he now, mid-Seventies or so?

Knowing that he was Mr Austria with his ordinary genetics, is an index of how much European BB has changed.

And the funny thing is is that at that particular time, Arnold thought Kurt was sensational in his built! Nothing great -- look at more pics of Kurt in his prime -- but enough to capture the attention of a 15 year old Arnold.

ND, if that old uniform pic is of Arnold, then I'm Lou Ferrigno's mom.

Someone found an ancient pic of someone in a Nazi get-up, who bore a passing (at best) resemblance to a young Arnold, relying upon the Gustav-was-a-Nazi stuff to convince dipshits that Arnold too was a goosestepper.

In adolescent pics, Arnold characteristically wore his hair in a nerdy side-parting. He didn't start sweeping it back until middle-age, by which time he was of course universally famous.

Look hard at that old pic, at the shape of the nose, the forehead, the jaw, and most of all the slope of the shoulders. Stupid comparison.

Zane did not have "scrawny" calves. His calves and thighs ( particularly his thighs) were considered best ever in his time...just check him in the famous 'vacuum pose' of his...you will see what I mean.

Moose, I have to stand by what I said about Zane's calves. In some stills they look like they hold their own, but in live-action posing, they are shown up as poor.

Frank Zane was touted as the new standard in condition, going for the ultra-cut skinless look. However, I think maybe in achieving that, he overdieted a little, and his calf-size suffered for it.

I dunno how Zane's calves could've been considered the best of his time (if you mean his winning streak) when there were Platz and Dickerson in the frame.

I have a feeling that Frank Zane's domination was somewhat engineered, maybe to make the judging community look a little more discerning. Maybe laymen were convinced that judges did little more than award the Sandow to the biggest, so Frank was used to refute that belief.

Don't get me wrong, I don't want to knock Zane. He was always in great shape, his posing was as good as anyone's we've seen yet, and he made the vacuum shot his own.

I have a somatotype similar to his, I'm 5'8" and an ecto-meso. I reckon Frank Zane would've looked better if he'd packed many more pounds onto his small bones.

There are some old articles of Zane training calves in Muscle Builder/ Power (about 1977) (this was when the pages were yellow!), and they looked great. They were comparable to Waller's (who, along with Mentzer a few years later, was considered to holder of the best calves around. Not bigger than them two guys, but complete in development.

Also, to clear one thing up for many on this board (not necessarily you TNBT)...symmetry and proportion are two different things.

Symmetry=if you were to cut the humkan body in half, from head to toe, making the cut down through the nose, mouth, front chest, groin, etc, you'd expect SYMMETRY to be involved if BOTH HALVES MATCHED IN THEIR SAMENESS 100%

That is symmetry.

Zane HIMSELF admits he did not have great symmetry. His left and right sides did not match well.

But he hid these discrepancies very well.

Arnold and everyone else, too.

Proportion ios the thing most of you guys THINK you are referring to...such as does the size of biceps overcome that of calves...is thorax too much for legs, etc.

I am close to Zane in proportions too, Knew I'd never be big.

Check my photos under moosejay on members photo board...you will see what I mean.

Best,

Mike

I know what you mean about symmetry Moose, and I don't think anyone, bodybuilder or otherwise, is truly symmetrical. Ever tried looking at half of a face photograph reflected in a mirror? Looks odd.

Proportion is something I don't think you can do a whole lot about, at least you cannot change it dramatically. I believe that the body is predisposed to hold the same proportions, one muscle will grow or shrink in proportion to others. You can tweak here and there, but that's about it.

Like when did you ever see a guy with enormous arms on a skinny body, due wholly to training?

I disagree about knowing you'll never be big. If you used enough gear and put in the work, you could cheat your frame.

Agreed with most.

But about me never being gigantic...I really tried, but had to go the way of  zane...I comepted at 205 once, was not cut.

Did my best at 186 (5'11" height).

But yes, maybe with the stuff guys today, agreed.

You can see some of my comp photos on the member's photo section.

I agree with most here...Zane went to 205 for his final Olympia...wanted to be bigger...his cuts suffered for it. He also said he tried early in his Career to train heavy such as with Arnold et al, and he was killing his joints.

I didn't know that Zane eventually competed at 205, I thought that was his off-season weight, his contest weight being around 185. Maybe if he'd been a bigger user he'd be dead by now, so maybe he's smart.

He only competed at that weight in his final Olympia...and , afterwards, he knew it was a mistake. I am pretty sure his last was the 83 Olympia, won by Samir Bannout.

Go to "General Topics", and scroll down to "Pictures Of members & More", for photos.

Moose, I was gonna get back to ya re your pics yesterday, but my 'puter slowed down on me big-time, I got pissed off and switched it off.

Anyway... First of all, when I scrolled down to that pic of you at about 24 y/o, I thought at first glance it was an old Bannout shot!

You definitely got a whole lot thicker in the years between that pic and the ones at 36/39.

Calves looked helluva lot better, so I guess you put a lot of work into them.

Why Moose by the way, I take it you're Canadian?

I saw you get stuck in that icy lake on the news the other day...

Here's Arnold imitating Sergio's "Victory-Pose"...

Wrong That pic was taken in the late 60's...Sergio became know for that pose in Germany few years later (1972)
So No imitating when Arnold was doing that pose years before.

Haha...thanks for your kind compliments, TNBT!

Yes, in my younger years, it was said that I resembled Bannout...facially, that is!

Funny...the old shots=gear....new shots...no gear!

Yeah...worked legs harder as got older...still never did match upper body...did what God allowed me, I guess!

Serious about the ice?

Please explain...not Canadian, but don't live far from Canada.
