Proof that our leaders in Congress and the Whitehouse have failed us over the past 10 years or so: The Costs Of InactionGary Bauer
December 20, 2007
As I have reported, illegal immigration is roiling the political scene like few other issues. Poll after poll has found that broad sections of the public – Republicans, Democrats, Independents – are furious at the inaction of our politicians when it comes to dealing with illegal immigration and border security. Yet, before leaving town this week, congressional liberals demonstrated their total contempt for the American people by gutting key provisions of the Secure Fence Act and further undermining English as our national language. They may regret doing so.
While Americans increasingly view illegal immigration as a homeland security issue – and rightly so in the post-9/11 world we are living in – there has been a heated debate over the economic pluses and minuses of illegal immigration. Many have argued that it is okay for the government and businesses to turn a blind eye to illegal immigration because the American people are benefiting from cheap labor. But a study released this week by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) will make it extremely difficult for any politician to defend that position in the future. The Business Journal of Phoenix carried this headline on Tuesday: “Congressional Study Shows Illegal Immigrants Sap Tax Dollars.”
The CBO report gathered data from the Rand Corporation, the Pew Hispanic Center, the Department of Homeland Security, several universities and various states. It found that the average income of illegal aliens was approximately half that of the average American citizen, meaning they are paying significantly less in state and federal taxes (assuming they are paying taxes), while consuming more in public benefits.
For example, the report estimates that 60% of illegal immigrants, and 50% of their children, lack health insurance. According to the CBO report, border states paid nearly $200 million in health care costs for illegal aliens in 2000, and we all know that health care costs have skyrocketed since then. The study also noted that several states have reported spending between 20% and 40% more to educate non-English speaking students. New Mexico alone spent nearly $70 million in 2004 to educate children who should not have been in the public schools. A more serious concern is criminal illegal aliens – especially violent gangs like MS-13. The CBO report found that in 2001, four southern border states spent more than $100 million on “law enforcement activities involving undocumented immigrants.” Remember – these estimates are only for a handful of states, and they are several years old.
And while Congress continues to ignore the problem, there was a disturbing report this week that our men and women on the frontline are facing more and more risks. According to the U.S. Border Patrol, assaults on agents are up dramatically. In the 12 month period ending September 30th, border agents were attacked nearly 1,000 times, and there have already been 250 assaults since October 1st. That’s a 38% increase from the same period last year! As a result of the increasing attacks with rocks, vehicles and Molotov cocktails, border agents have reportedly fired tear gas into Tijuana, Mexico, several times.
Now, it could be a total coincidence, but it was during this period that Agents Ramos and Compean began serving their outrageous prison sentences. Is it possible that some illegal aliens, whose very first action upon entering this country is to break our laws, may have concluded that we lack the resolve to enforce our own laws and that our agents are little more than sitting ducks? Many people warned that our agents would pay a price for the miscarriage of justice in the Ramos and Compean case, and it appears as though that warning is being borne out.
The people’s patience with the government’s inaction on illegal immigration is about up. Politicians who continually thumb their noses at the American people by refusing to take serious measures to address this issue may well find that their arrogance ultimately costs them their jobs!
