I hate to go back to this but...
« on: December 22, 2007, 02:41:58 PM »
How the hell did Flex wheeler lose in 1998.

All the coleman nuthuggers can come back with he was drier, had better legs, thicker and more defined from the back etc. etc. etc.

But Flex just "looked better" way more symmetrical, waist looks like its 28 or 30", absolutely NO GUT, abs are insane and is just very pleasing to the eye.

Can't help but wonder if he'd won for the next 3 or 4 years if people like Dex, Vic would be getting the nod instead of that bloated mess of bulk with a 45+ inch waist that is our current Mr. O

Agreed. Flex should have won. Ronnie just wasn't very pleasing to the eye in that contest. In later years like 2003 he was the outright winner hands down no complaining but in 98 Flex should have taken it.

He wasn't as ripped from the back as ronnie, and ronnie didn't only have a bigger back but drier and fuller back. Better leggs and upper body and arms.

Flex got him on waist, so what.

The video link is from 1999......and you are all arguing about Flex (who was softer in 99 than 98) should and him winning it in 98.

Is it from 1999?

Either way, the argument still stands....they were essentially unchanged from 1998 to 1999 (Flex was slightly better in 1999)

because he failed to obtain the same level of conditioning that he did for the Olympia in 1993, where he was 0.0 % body fat. If he would have done that he would have won hands down....he was maybe 2% at best in 1998

quote Flex magazine Jan 1999

When Ronnie is 100% , Flex has to be 100% to prevail. On October 10 , 1998 , Flex wasn't and Ronnie was.

Stating the obvious if Flex was on 100% he would beat Coleman

Flex Wheeler

It's true I didn't quite duplicate my condition at the Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic. if I'd been able to do that , I would have won EASILY !!

Flex commenting how would have beaten Ronnie with ease if he replicated his ASC conditioning but Alas he didn't and Ronnie was the rightful winner, even off and Ronnie being spot on he just barely beat Flex so that tens to supports Flex's claim of being able to beat Ronnie with ease if he was on .

Look at the background...and most obvious is the spectacle that Flex put on (turning his back to the audience). In 98 he accepted that he lost- even in ND's article quote, he admits it though with a sore loser attitude. :-\

Sore Loser? Well, I think he had the right to react the way he did.

The differences were minimal as ND put it and to be frank, not many could argue if he had won the show.

What do you feel about the second part of my statement....would others like Dex and Vic have gotten a better look if Flex had won, instead of guys like Gunter, James and Rhul?

Flex was always smaller than Ronnie and that never prevented him from beating Ronnie eight times previously .

Its stating facts , the fact is Flex Wheeler is a man who was very capable of beating Ronnie Coleman he did it eight times previously and the second quote is from Flex himself stating the obvious if he was in shape he would have been 1998 Mr Olympia but he's his own biggest enemy .

How is that not being a sore loser? "Had I done this or that, I could have taken over the world!!!"

But you know what? He did NOT. So he didn't win. It's sour grapes, or being a sore loser being that he said what he did. Had he said "I was not at my best, and Ronnie won fair and square, he deserves it" then that would suffice and be more professional.

Many have argued- and with you ad nauseam- that Ronnie won. He was bigger, harder and more dominant in 99 than he was in 98. Tom Prince said it. Flex himself said it in the magazine that bears his name. I'll paraphrase his quote; "Ronnie won. I wasn't at my best and tried to do the prep myself instead of with Chad. What I did on stage was in the heat of the moment, but looking at the photos, Ronnie got what he deserved."

I don't really think this is relevant to the discussion at hand, but to humor you....

...No I don't think it would have been any different in later years. Ronnie didn't show up in gargantuan size till '03. The mass game was being played, no doubt, but Ronnie took it to the next level in '03. Ronnie DID show up off in 2000, and in 2001, but it wasn't till '03 that the mass at all costs mentality took over and our Mr. O became a big bloated bag of shit ever year thereafter.

If Flex had won, would it have been different? Probably not, imo. Flex put on 20lbs or so to compete with Ronnie for the 99 title. Things may have been a bit more aesthetic, but by how much we can't say. Because just like the "would of, could have, should have" mentality Flex displayed in ND's quote......Flex didn't win we will never know.

Unless you invented a time machine?

The problem Flex fans (such as myself) have in arguing whether or not he deserved an O is that we have very little tangible arguments to make.

Was Ronnie dryer? Yes. Was he thicker from the back? Yes Sharper from the back? Yes Bigger more defined legs? Yes.

However, Flex was so structurally superior that I don't believe Flex even had to be 100% to win.

Your argument that Ronnie did not play the size game until 2003 is plain wrong. Ronnie won because he had a better collection of individual body parts, better back, bigger legs, etc... Unfortunately bodybuilding is not merely who can get the best individual body parts but present the most complete, aesthetic package...which Flex could undoubtedly do in every contest he entered with little to no effort (which he undoubtedly put forth).

When Ronnie won the O, the judging criteria totally changed from Best overall package, lines and symmetry to best individual body parts

So, because genetically my body is better than Jay Cutlers, I should win the Mr. Olympia even because I'm not in the best condition? I'm also 100lbs lighter than he is, and I'm holding water worse than his lower back, but genetically I'm superior so rightfully I SHOULD win?

Is that what you're saying?

How is having the best individual body parts (Ronnie, as you say) the same as having BIGGER body parts? (Again, Ronnie as you say-which negates the discourse, really)

Dexter destroyed everyone in the 2004 Olympia I think. Ronnie got too big and lost his waist and Jay was bigger but the condition wasn't on point.
