Wimbledon prize money same for men and women
« on: December 23, 2007, 09:31:38 AM »
Even though the men play 5 rounds while women play 3, and the men's matches get a lot more viewers/attendees.

"In 1999 then club chairman John Curry stated: "We do surveys of all the people who come on a regular basis and, in three surveys over the past 10 years, 70% of the people say that first and foremost the thing they want to watch is men's singles."

Female tennis players will earn the same prize money as their male counterparts at Wimbledon this year for the first time ever after the All England Club finally bowed to the weight of public opinion and the will of the WTA Tour. The US and Australian Opens have treated both sexes equally for several years now, while the French Open paid both singles champions the same sum for the first time last year, but the All England Club has previously refused to back down on the issue. Chief among their arguments has been the fact men play best-of-five-set contests, while women only play best-of-three, but outgoing chairman Tim Phillips has also cited club polls indicating that men's tennis gave better value for money.

Imagine if the IFBB had the same prizes for women.  Anyone know how the attendees compare at the Ms. Olympia to the Mr?

I imagine the prize money created for the men had something to do with how much money their contests generated.

It would be very hard to force political correctness (equal prize money for men and women) in a sport that is known for not supporting it (for example in the judging).

The question is; should the women get paid the same when the men make the IFBB more profit?

You are talking about a sport where the winner receives a tremendous amount of money, and the networks get a lof of money too.  Tennis is not where it used to be either, as at the moment, there are very few major big stars from the US on the men's team.

Equality is great, but if the men's prize money is not increased, other championships will eventually surpasse it, and perhaps some of the top players might bypass it. The question is will advertisers pay as much for a women's early match compared to the men's early matches?

Pro Basketball, pro soccer, and many others are still vastly different, as it really depends where the money comes in from.

If you are a promoter, and you know 80% of your money comes from the men's side, and 20% come from the women's side, would you still generate 50% money for both. It sounds good if you can cover the expense, and have enough money coming in, but if you don't, you either choose one, or work on it.

No, not at all.

The amount of prize money should be determined by the amount of money the competition brings in. The mens BB show brings in more money than the Ms.O, thus, it would be a disasterous misallocation of funds if the two competitions were equally prized.

You simply don't have the same prizes for a local rugby championship as you have for the superbowl.

Wimbledon must have been under pressure from complaints.

Wimbledon must have been under pressure from complaints.

Trouble comes when ideals and rhetoric goes beyond the sound principles of business (except if this was a "PR" stunt).

Just look at what happened when George Soros screwed the British pound back in the 90s, partially because the finance minister thought he could use his idealism to override the market. George made a billion or something in 1 day, the British economy went into a recession that according to experts became twice as long as necessary because of the finance ministers moves.

Pragmatism must always override idealism.

Women's tennis has far more paid TV viewers than men's tennis.
