well, they were the best, when the sport wasnt too much like it is now...it was VERY different times...if we didnt had Rickson, Royce and so on, we would not have Fedor, CroCop and many others i think simply because probably MMA would not exist

Well they were the "best" at only one aspect of MMA. It just so happens that one dimension put them on the map. When all of the other disciplines learned BJJ things changed very rapidly. The bad thing is that they didn't modify their game to add the appropriate things to keep them at the top. I'm sure we will see a Gracie someday soon come back to the top with a nice standup game..
