Agreed.

Anyone who insists on speaking some other tongue can go to whichever country that language is spoken in.

English only please.

I agree, of course.  If an individual business wants to make other language choices available, that's all fine and good, but the default choice better be English if they want my business.  I have spoken.

I like what Arnold said to the Spanish Americans, how they need to turn off the Spanish Channel.  Good for him.

Not to shit on anyone's English-only parade, but in Europe, just about everyone there is multi-lingual.  I don't see what the problem would be if Spanish were pushed a lot more on students beginning in early grade school to ensure all can speak both English and Spanish fluently.  In a perfect world, we would be able to understand English or Spanish just fine if either one were spoken to us....no "press 1" option available.  However, to us older folks, that isn't really an option as learning a 2nd language from scratch is difficult.

The Mexicans and Central Americans are pouring into our country by the hundreds of thousands.  There is no realistic option on forcing them to speak English fluently.  It won't/can't happen.

Then that's their problem.

I’m an American. If I ever moved to Germany, Sweden, Japan, etc. I would never expect them to make lingual accommodations for me.
In fact, I would see it as my responsibility to learn their language before moving.

I was cooking yesterday, prattling on and on in my high-school and prison spanish.  sounded just like one of the 'ricans.  If I can learn some spanish they should certainly be at the point where their english is better than my spanish, which is NOT the case  ;)

I think that they can get to the point where they can at least understand and communicate basic English.

It should be a requirement to become a citizen or after you have had your green card or whatever for a certain amount of time.

Hmmm, what about all the Italians, Germans, etc that poured into Ellis Island and learned the damn language.  I stand behind these people in line at fast food joints and they can't even say "number 1,2, or 3".  Where does it end?

friend of mine i met down the gym came to ireland here 15 months ago. is now fluent and speaks fantastic english.

Vasyl said when he arrived he only knew 10 words in english maximum.

The amount of polish, lithuanian, bulgarians, ruissians, latvians and basically all E.Europeans coming to ireland is insane. The majority of then cant speak english. Its a shame though.

Hmmm, what about all the Italians, Germans, etc that poured into Ellis Island and learned the damn language.  I stand behind these people in line at fast food joints and they can't even say "number 1,2, or 3".  Where does it end?

Very, very different circumstances.  The Italians and Germans did not pour into this country at anywhere near the same rate and even further away from the actual numbers that Mexicans/Central Americans came into this country.  Here are some of the reasons(yes, I love using bullets).

- The Europeans coming into this country of the early 20th century did so to start over.  Wipe the slate clean.  Jobs were plentiful.  The Mexicans/Central Americans come here simply because of the jobs...and send the money back to their homeland.  In essence, the Europeans of old wanted to become Americans(and shared similar background, culture, religion, and ethnicity with the Founders and the people already here) whereas today's hispanic immigrants are still loyal to their native countries and simply use the jobs here to help support what they have at home.  They have no desire to become Americans.

- Back then, the US did not have a policy like today of ultra-tolerance.  Meaning, the people back then were pretty much forced to speak English.  Today, companies and governments go out of their way to offer services in their native languages, which, in the end, defeats the desire and necessity to speak English.

- Many of the people who come here to the US from Mexico hold a certain grudge against us.  Have you seen the recent crime rates in Mexico itself towards tourists?  Have you seen what groups such as La Raza and MECHA state and distribute?  Some believe the US Southwest is rightfully theirs.  The Europeans of old did not hold any grudges or hostilities to this nation, but were endearing to it.

But, yea, I know what you mean.  I live right on the Dade and Broward county borders.  Miami, and especially Hialeah is absolutely crazy.  Hard to even get a check cashed down there.
