Sergio Oliva tells of his escape from Cuba, on PBW

1 day before he was set to compete in the Pan Am games...

Sergio lived in Cuba. He was on the weightlifting team.  He wanted to compete so he could win a gold medal.  He says he could have easily won 3 gold medals.  But if you compete, you're taking a chance that they send you back to Cuba.

or you could escape now, enter the US.  No medals, but you get to live in the USA.

So he fled and entered the USA as a political refugee.   He says he would have been HANGED back home.  If they caught you doing bodybuilding in Cuba, they put you in prison.  Just plain weightlifting - no bodybuilding.

You sure about that?   Cuba's official tourism website doesn't mention this.

Bob has his own stall in the mens room?

I know he eats there all the time, but that's kinda extreme.

He also takes a lot of dumps there.

That was too funny that when asked about the '69 IFBB Olympia against Arnold, Sergio went on this tangent that had nothing to do with what was asked and Sergio went on to say, 'Now, what was the question?'  :D

Sergio talks about slapping his wife like it was no big deal and he's glorified as a legend.

Only in bodybuilding.

Sergio did a good job . . . He was gracious, funny and self-deprecating. Listen carefully and you'll find some real gems in there.

The question regarding the violence between Sergio and his ex-wife seemed to be gratuitous . . . especially when you only have 22 minutes to talk to the greatest bodybuilder of all time. It's important to remember that this talk doesn't just involve Sergio and his ex-wife, it is also potentially very upsetting to their son, Sergio Jr.

The same goes for the "fight" story question regarding an incident during his police career.  The show is now getting real good at repeating the sensationalistic garbage that certain writers seem to have made their stock and trade to dig up.  Let's stick to the sport or else rename it PGW (Pro Gossip Weekly).

The semi-comic/tragic moment came when Bob included Chuck Sipes in a list of living bodybuilders in an attempt to make a point about the longevity of many of the champions of the sport. ooops!

Very upsetting = glorifying spousal abuse. Bastard deserved to be shot.

The "sport" is full of felons, drug dealers and wife beaters. Let's not get holier than thou now.

5 minutes listening to Oliva drone on, usually on tangents unrelated to the question is more than enough time to clarify exaclty why Weider had to have Schwarzenegger as Mr. Olympia. A no-brainer after hearing Oliva talk. Unfortunately most top BBs past and present sound more like Sergio, and aren't at all suited to widen the mass appeal of BB. Weider & Arnold both marketing people and showmen, Oliva rattling off nonsequiturs.

Yeah...I'm sure his 25 year old son knows nothing of this, and cant read his fathers own book. Our bad...

I mentioned Chuck Sipes as one of the greats of that era, it wasn't mentioned as a list of living legends....

No, his son is, of course, quite aware of the troubles that split up his family.  If you recall, during his interview segment, Sergio said quite a few times what a "good" and "important" show PBW is, he was referring exclusively to what his son had told him about your show . . . that it is respectful, respectable, etc. . . . So, in essence, his son "vouched" for a show that then went on to trash his mom on the air.  What was that you were saying at the beginning of last night's show about not talking about wives or any other people who are "not there to defend themselves"?

You also asked his dad about police brutality.  A nice tidbit that David Robson pulled out of a trash bag for you (just like his stellar contribution to journalism that was the center of last week's show).

You're right, the show isn't turning into the National Inquirer, it's a bit more like The Star . . . American Media owns that trash rag as well as your sponsor Weider Publications . . . and the list goes on.

We went on to "trash" his ex wife? Please tell everyone just where that is on the show? Don't recall any questions centering around "police brutality" either....maybe you were listening to some other BB radio show..?

JUust like any star that makes an appearance on TV or radio to sell their book/ movie, etc....Sergio talked about what HE wanted to talk about, as many discussions took place before he ever made it on the air...quests can (and have) requested that certain subjects not be asked in the past...and we have honored every one of them.

Obviously, you have another agenda here, which is quite easy to see....you're wasting your time.

Interview was fine.  They spent almost the whole interview talking about the Olympias of the 60's and the Arnold rivalry.  The question about the incident when he got shot by hs wife is a big story in Sergio's life. It would have been lame if they didnt ask Sergio about that.  I thought it was interesting the part about him being banned from the IFBB after winning the Olympia.  Only complaint about it was that Sergio's english is still hard to follow.

I have met Arlene and Sergio so predicted some sparks in that marriage. I might have asked Sergio what led to his slapping Arlene. As anyone knows who has been in relationships there are always other sides of the story and sometimes extreme behaviour sees violent reactions. I don't condone violence but for goodness sake, women hit men all the time and the men have to accept it. If they report it these 'abused' victims are either laughed at or dismissed as sissies.

Sergio didn't like being called a son of a bitch. Why? Well, he took that swearing literally as an insult towards his mother. What did Sergio do to cause Arlene to call him that? Arlene was a smart woman and she should have known what she was getting herself into. I happen to like them both but that is no guarantee that they will live happily ever after.

It was a good interview and those who haven't heard it should listen to it before commenting too much on what was said, etc. Lots of behaviour is understandable only in the relevant situation. Sergio admits he still has trouble with English but anyone who has met him knows he is no fool and doesn't take any crap from others.

I think Dan and Bob did a good job with this interview. They gave Sergio plenty of time to speak his mind and that is what we heard.
