That's becuase you can't just dump hundreds of millions of dollars worth of positions without driving the prices down by the very act of you doing it.  There isn't unlimited liquidity out there.  It's a lot easier to do when you're just playing around with a few hundred thousand as a hobby like I do.  I sold all my long stocks after christmas, and took short positions in financials and tech, all of which have made money while the market was falling.  Oh, and the CEO of Merrill got sacked over their exposure to CDO's backed by bad mortgages, not stock market investments...  in the future, at least try to know what the hell you're talking about.
