can you wrap TOO hard?
« on: February 05, 2008, 04:09:58 PM »
yesterday I wrapped as hard as I could get it while going for heavy squats..I'm used to some soreness and bruising after but it still hurts a little even today. Like it's bruised. I'm stretching my hams in alot of different positions and it makes it better but hte back of my knee is hurting me sometimes. Just part of it or what?

you have to be careful wrapping your legs too tight, you can actually cut off circulation to the deep arteries and veins of your legs.

that shouldn't be a concern for the very short time needed for a max single or double, most people who wrap SERIOUSLY end up with some bruising, it's perfectly normal.

Your feet should go numb long before you reach the point of damage from wrapping tightly.

Why the hell are you wrapping yourself? :-*

Get someone else to wrap you.

Then you'll learn what tight wrapping is. 8)

When I wrap lifters, I wrap real hard, but the best result is when I wrap say an 8.5 or an 9 out of a 10.

But if you wrap conventional, then the harder, the better IMO.

WTF?

When you use a certain technique of wrapping, it get so tight, that it gets completely impossible to lift if you would pull as hard as possible when wrapping.

Can't explain it better than that. :-\

I work out alone..and the last time someone wrapped me they had no fucking clue. I do it in the cage and help myself up along the uprights!  ;D  I wrap myself because I knwo WHAT a good wrap to ME feels like and what's comfortable..and where I want it finished at. I wrap hard enough that there's no extra give on the way around and end up fucking sweating after putting them on. I have a hard time getting my knees to flex with 500lbs without the wraps trying to push me back up. They stop me dead at parallel and with 550 it's a lil easier to break it. Iv'e always wrapped myself and prefer it that way. My legs are usually two shades of red and have no feeling below the knee by the time I walk out a squat.

Never stretch the knee wraps out to the MAX when wrapping, even on your single rep maximum effort. always leave some room for the wraps to stretch as you squat, this will allow them to recoil and help blast you up out of the whole.

Let's say this is 1ft of unstretched knee wrap
______ 12"

If i stretched it out to the max it would look like this
____________ 24"

I always wrap when i get to 585lbs
_______ 14"

675lbs would be tighter
__________ 20"

700lbs and up would be between this
__________20-22"

The heavier the weight, the tighter the wrap, but never a full max'd out stretch on the knee wraps. They act like a rubber band to help pop you up, if their stretched to the max they will not recoil, they will only cut into you and hurt like hell with no real benefit.

just my .02, it works for me.

Also, in my humble opion, knee wraps should only be used when doing HEAVY triples or less.
