Renegade NPC entrant who still pisses me off

Have been running NPC CT and NE states for about 10 years with Katz.

We do okay...get 60-80 entrants.

One guy, who was, in the '80's, a decent HW NPC guy...welll.the years have not been kind to him or his physique.

He bought many tickets to his "comeback" show with us.

Brought all family and freinds, the whole deal.

Well, four guys in open HW (National Qualifier)...he comes in fourth.

Huge gut, mabe some arms...but he shoulda been 40 pounds lighter.

He porbably represented himself worst than anyone else in the entire show...included first-times.

Well...several days later...I get a terse e-mail from this champ:

"You are a shitty doctor, a shitty promoter, and an even shittier emcee. If I run across you, you will be sorry.

Well, I could have retorted, "Try a diet next time,"..."How many months are you due...?", or, you did look as smooth as a newly opened jar of Skipp's p-butter.

But, I took the high road.

I wrote:

"Mr. XXXX: I am taking liberty with forwarding your interesting e-mail to my colleague, Jim Manion, with the suggestion that you are NEVER enmabled to compete in, train anyone for, or attend any NPC-sanctioned offered anywhere, for the rest of your life.

I actually forwarded this e-mail, got a letter thankingf me from Manion, and never heard or saw from this poor, tortured man again.

No. Agrred, it would not. Just wanted to take him down a notch.

How about THIS, though?

A recent prejudging at the same show/different year...had such an asshole in the audience that I was asked to approach him and speak with him (this before finally resorting to summoning the two cops we keep on hand at the front door, which we must do for any events that attracts large numbers of people).

A burly guy (you know, big under clothes, but has never and will never coimpete) anjd knows everything) was gettingb very loud about the fact that we did not have a program book for the show and that last week's show somewhere else had one and the show was so easy to follow.

He carried on that HE, naturally, could run a show much better than myself, Jerry Mastrangelo and Mike Katz (MK & JM running these things for OVER 40 years).

You had to be there to see what a tool this guy was.

So, as he was disturbing both spectators AND judges during the prejudging and calmly and nicely asked him if there was a problem with anything (I did not say what is YOUR probablem or anything like that to set him off....diplomacy, boys)

He went into the spiel, loudly and even more angrily, about "NO PROGRAM"./..HOW IN HELL CAN I FOLLOW THIS SHOW without one...yadadadada.

Now, I looked at his lovely girlfriend sitting next to him, who was most obviously mortified in embarassment.

Soi, I tried, one more time, to save this guy.

But he started up on personal attacks on Mike Katz and how he sucks.

Well, Mike May do a lot of things...but sucking ain't one of them," I retorted.

Now, it was like, fuck this guy, he is OUT of here.

These were the options I provided him:

He and his companion could follow me up and out to the outside doors, and they could peacefully take their leave for are oh, so shitty contest.

If that was to hi taste, I would have both of our fully armed police officers come down and physically escort he and his date out of the facility...(Think..."Don't TAZE me, bro...Don't taze me.... )

But I didn't leave it at that. I looked at him evely, and asked, "Hey, are you here to watch a friend or relative in the prejudging?

Yeah, man, my little brother."

"Oh...I see you have an entry form in your hand. You will, if you'd read any of it, that I, as a promoter, reserve the right to disqualify any contestant at any and for basically any reason.

Asshole brothers are a great reason.

Never mind the cops. If you do not leave right now, and, I have a feeling your brother is a nice kid, and I am sure he has worked all year and very hard for his moment in the sun....if you and your galpal don't run, not walk out of here, I will summarily disqualify the young man.

I will blame you for this, and rightly so.

I needn't have said anymore...his mortified galpal dragged his mangy ass out of the show.

Don't know if I'd have thrown his bro out....just glad Katz wasn't there yet...I have seen him take types like this "down to Chinatown"

Again I totally agree with you about assholes in the audience BUT taking it out on his brother, basically disqualiying him for ANY reason is being just as bad as the guy in the audience, maybe worse. Now, you did say that you "didn't know" if you would have which to me implies that you "may" have. Again, not a cool thing to even think of doing. You may think that you can toss someone out for any reason, but that is not true.

And it would not be in my heart to do that...I competed over nearly a 25 year span myself.

And, as you read, I did not expell the kid from the show.

However, let's say it got to the point where I had to summon the entrant just to help cool down his brother (and, please...keep in mind....any of us that run shows HARDLY have time for such unfettered bullshit)...because I was thinking of eliminating him.

He'd see that it WAS, indeed, his lot to be responsible for the behavior of those visiting to see hiom perform.

Rules are rules...and I am all for bending them to make everbody happy.

Now, if the entrant was also a total, colossal asshole (and, as you know, people like this DO exist ....and I saw that my efforts to other, more deserving bb's and fans were left wanting....then him and his herd thundering jackasses of an "enterage" would be gone.

I did ask the embarrassed girlfriend, while ingnoring cro-magnon asshole, WHY she was going out with him...if she was going out with him or just happened to accompany him...and that did her parentls know about her plight?....all while ignoring cromag...as he was sitting right there...it was CLASSIC.

The day worked out great for everyone.

The competitor in question won his class, was electrified with happiness, and both He AND his parents approached me and my co-promoters and profusely apologized for the other son's behavior.

All bad had passed, and I thanked them and him for his participation and welcomed him back in the future.

I got the feeling this was not the first apology they had made for him.

That is not how we run our shows.

We don't care for disgusting, disrespectful commesnt coming out of the mouths of bores who sit next to mothers, fathers, grandparents, and others who try to enjoy the show in piece and not hear profane, pornographic-like talk.

They can go to the Arnold for that. And that is fine.

IT IS IN OUR CONTRACT with competitors that it is THEIR respoonsibility to control their peeps.

Now, this is RAQRELY a problem. So we rarely invoke any of the tenets of this rule.

In the aforementioned jackasses case (some of you may have even slugged him-I may have if I was younger and not had much to lose)...although he did leave on his own...his brother WOULD have been summoned. We would have made it HIS responsibility to get his brother to peacefully leave.

If not, he'd be DQ'd (although the odds of this happening would still be miniscule.

I already told you I competed many years...I know what goes into it, etc, etc.

But rules are rules, and Katz READS THEM ALL TO EVERYONE AT THE STARTY OF EACH COMPETITOR MEETING.
