Best gym from the 80's were;

1- Original World Gym Santa Monica

2-  Gold's Venice (would have ranked it first but half the equipment was broken at any given time, dont even try to get matching dumbells, plus tons of fruitcakes to deal with and fuck up a workout)

3- Original Gold's Gym San Diego.

A. Ranked by "HARD CORE".
B. Ranked by "Most Impressive Looking".
c. Ranked by "Amenities".
d. Ranked by any  other category of your own choosing.

Hard Core - Gold's in Venice back ten years ago. But it's changed today. You agree Mr Wishbone?

Most Impressive - Las Vegas Athletic Club, Henderson.

Amenities - Not into amenities so I got no idea, but if a view is an "amenity", I'd say 24 Hour Fitness in Waikiki overlooking the beach and bikinis and beginner's surfboard area.

My choice of category is "Wierdness" and the top of that list has to be the original ZUVER's in Costa Mesa, California back in the 60's. Reverend Zuver had a huge gorilla out in front with a multi-ton front door with a sign on it saying, "If you have trouble opening this door, go train someplace else!". The floor was made out of olympic plates and he had the "heaviest" of any piece of equipment imaginable.

And all this "wierdness" was in a huge "storage shed" along the side of his house in a residential area.

Wish I could remember more but that was a long time back. (Oh yea, his son was "Rhino".)
Kaliber Gym Trondheim Norway (now kaliber training studio cause they were scaring the pussy away) - when I lived there it was my second home I lived 5 min walk away and I used to slip slide my way there everyday. They had one IFBB pro and a bunch of juiced up bbers who were cool as fuck and trained hard as hell. Did my first cycle there and there was 1 kat who used to shoot slin right in the locker room. that shit was hard fucking core, man i miss that place - that shit had some bikes treadmills and a shit load of weight check out the pics

hard core:  Easton Gym on Beverly 20 some years ago.   Jim Morris Gym 25+ years ago

but at 12 years old, I was probably easily impressed  ;)

It’s still there but probably changed. (Easton Gym 8053 Beverly Boulevard Los Angeles). Also Bill Pearls Gym on Manchester is still there.

Mid City Gym in New York City was VERY hardcore.  Peals gym on Manchester is still there as well.
Ray Mentzers Muscle Mill was hardcore. So was Barlow’s Gym in Torrance, CA.

Gold's Venice 1981-late 90's when Pete, Tim and Ed still owned it.

World Gym in Lake Forest was cool in the 80’s.

Pete Grymko, Danny Padilla and about 15 of us had keys to a whole in the wall place back in Rochester with a bunch of steel and home-made equipment. It was in the basement of an old German Gymnastics club in a building built in the late early 1900’s. Turner Barbell Club. The pipes leaked, it was freezing cold in the winter and we had to wipe the sweat off the bars in the summer.

This is seldom mentioned but I would have loved to have trained at the Quonset hut in Deland Florida with Arthur Jones when Casey Viator and Sergio were there.

Duncan YMCA in Chicago where Bob Gadja and Sergio trained was supposed to be one of the bst equipped in the country back in the 70’s.

I imagine West-Side Barbell in Ohio is pretty brutal.

and keep moving!

Forgot about Barlows.  Dave did you know Renaissance in Hawthorne.  Back in the 70's and early 80's.  Gene Mozee worked there a little.  How about the YMCA in San Pedro.  The best "Y" gym anywhere.

Not a commercial gym but for hugeness and a variety of equipment, the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. Unbelievable, almost the size of half a football field if I remember correctly. Power racks, "A" frames, sleds, lifting platforms, etc from wall to wall.  Early '90's when I saw it. Probably now a days there are lots of college gyms bigger and better. But that one still lingers in my mind. Heard the Big Ten has some great gym's also.  USC's & UCLA's wasn't too bad though not nearly matching Nebraska's. Thing about college gym's/training places is that some very fine co-eds trained there also. And you got a chance to set up kegger's party's for the weekends.

Some college gyms could easily compete with any commercial gym.  The University of Hawaii looks awesome.  Our high school gym when I went was one room with a Universal Multi station in the middle.  Only a few dumbbells.

I like this gym

dohertys gym for the convenience now being a 24 hr gym, and its the most hardcore around in melbourne ,

but the old muscle australia gym in the late 80s before it closed down, sonny schmidt used to train there, the equipment was very heavy duty,
the seated row had a 500lb stack, and they had the last vertical leg press i have seen

Bob Bonham's "Strong and Shapely"
Diamond Gym
Roger Schwab's "Main Line Health & Fitness".

Best East Coast Gyms I have ever been to.

A nice hotel gym in NYC is the gym at the Parker Meridien.
