is this a new thing or have i just realised?....
« on: February 23, 2008, 05:59:04 PM »
why do americans say " 300...50,000 " when they mean 350,000 (three hundred "and" fifty thousand)

its like they mean 300 x 50,000 which would be 15 million...

also when saying "2008" they say 2000(pause)8.....(should be 2000 "and" 8)

whats going on here...ive started to hear it in official commercials and with people who otherwise have decent grammar and vocabulary?

whats going on?....

It's even cooler when we say 10 large ($10,000) or "he weighed in at a buck-fifty" (150 pounds)

Americans are often seen as dorky, but we got some mad skillz in in the mouth talking department.

I've never heard anyone put "and" in the middle of those phrases.   It's not "new"... I think you just realized.

good observation.

Language is full of shit like this. I try to notice these things but this one kept slipping. two-thousand-eight. That sounds so much more... right.

In America, it's always been said "three hundred fifty thousand".  Just like we've always spelled words like "labor" and "color" without the extra "u" you goofballs add.

BTW thanks for the straight answer ....." In America, it's always been said "three hundred fifty thousand" "
