Media has speculated that Blair is planning to become the first President of the European Council (often touted as the "President of the European Union" or the "President of Europe"), a post created in the Treaty of Lisbon that would come into force in 2009, if successfully ratified.

Blair has been the most common name connected with the post. Touted as far back as 2002, rumours re-emerged since his resignation.[37] In June 2007 French president Nicolas Sarkozy was the first leader to propose that Blair be the first president,[38] support which was reiterated in October 2007 following an agreement on the Treaty of Lisbon.

Gordon Brown, Blair's successor, added his support but noted it was premature to discuss candidates before the treaty was approved. A spokesman for Tony Blair has not ruled out Blair accepting the post, saying he was concentrating on his current role in the Middle East. Some believe he is unlikely to take the position as it comes with few powers.[39] Blair was later invited to speak on European issues at a rally of Sarkozy's party, the Union for a Popular Movement, on 12 January 2008. This fueled speculation further.[40][41]

He is intelligent, he is brave and he is a friend. We need him in Europe. How can we govern a continent of 450 million people if the President changes every six months and has to run his own country at the same time? I want a President chosen from the top - not a compromise candidate - who will serve for two-and-a-half years.

—French President Nicolas Sarkozy, January 2008, [42]

From what I know of Tony Blair, he seems like an excellent leader.

I wish the American dollar would go farther so I could visit Europe more!

Who cares? You don't know shit about Europe or the European Union....as a European I can tell you that the EU is a good thing. As a citizen of an EU country I can live and work anywhere within the EU without a visa. That is a good thing.

You are a European now?  Didn't you say that you are an American?  Are all Europeans as loving, peaceful and friendly as you are?   ;D

I never said whether this was good or bad, just posting some interesting news.  So chill!

USA/Hungary

Mind you, I think the USA is an entirely different bag of beans, comparing Europe to it is a bad way to go, particularly as far as the EU goes.

Yeah - great idea if you are from Eastern Europe - you can go to the UK & work for half the money a Brit could work for (considering he needs to house & feed his family) and put him out of a job as well as sending the $$$ home to Poland  or wherever so it's not even spent in the UK and a benefit to their economy that way.

Add in the non-payment of taxes & it seems like a pretty fucking shit deal if you are born & bred in the UK as I was.

Blair is the UK's version of Bush. It's the next logocal step for Blair to be the leader of what will one day be the biggest fascist state in the world.

Why do you say that? You should back it up with information rather than stupid one liners. It is in my interests to be able to work and live anywhere in Europe AND the USA.

Europe has an entirely different history than the USA. It is infinitely more ancient and its history played a large role in the formation of the EU.

Look, I like and supported Ron Paul but his ideas are applicable to the USA, not Europe.

I hate the State.

Since when was "European" a nationality?

There are Finns, Swedes.

Then there are Turks, Greeks, Serbs, Italians.

All of the above are "Europeans".

But I don't really see why you group them together like that.

Hedgehog,
I was just messing with Deicide with that question, using sarcasm in my response to his "loving, peaceful and friendly" post in which he said "I'm European".  If Deicide had said "I'm Asian" in his post, I would have used "Asian" instead of "European" in my response.  I'm well aware that the attitude of one person does not represent the attitude of his/her entire "group".  Don't take it so seriously.
