He was bigger but not better.  Katz had an ugly physique.

Katz had small arms and legs for his massive torso. So unbalanced. Never as cut as Waller either.

I always thought, and still do think, that their coloring back then was way better than it is now.  I can't understand exactly what has changed.  Have the lights gotten that much brighter that the competitors need to actually be painted black to look good?  Seems like the competitors definition showed up just fine back in the day.

Competitive bbing was so much more hetero than it is now, that's what I notice everytime I watch that movie.

Neither was the internet. Which meant no-one was making stupid comments about them to anonymous others.

They went back and forth in several shows...Katz beat Waller in Mr. World in 1972

QT (Quick Tan) and 'Tan In A Minute' were two products used to get color in those times

Bodybuilders actually worked on their tans in the sun, like normal people and didn't have the artificial tans stuff that's prevelant today.  Their coloring was better because it wasn't fake.

I always thought that Cutler looked funny when he used to appear on stage with a bright white or blotchy face and an ultra-dark tan.  (see example below.)  He's gotten better since and actually tanned his face to better match his body.

Waller destroyed Katz physique wise, no comparison.

Agreed about Walker, he was better than Waller, with equal balance and more size. Even Waller's strong point legs Walker was better; you can see that for just a second in the movie even though Grant and Walker are ignored.

Waller like Columbu benefitted big-time by being one of the Weider boys and from his nationality. I was backstage beside Walker the following year when he won, he was huge like a noseguard. Waller was a lot more balanced than Katz but the main thing was he was one of the Weider boys, which allowed him to win sometimes when otherwise he wouldn't have.

Paul Grant was good too, in some areas better than Waller but didn't have quite the overall balance.

Mike Katz did not have a very good build for asthetic competition period end of story, next.

None of today's physiques could shine the shoes of Katz or any of the guys from the 70's.

Now you can end the story.

I remember reading the book way back when, and was so struck by how arrogant Arnold was, but man all that stuff he was saying came true and beyond. Pretty amazing really.

agreed, waller was in the purple circle, which meant that arnold was always going to win (weider had invested too much in him for this not to be the case) and his workout partners would be 'looked after' in order of importance (obviously robby lucked out though).

to arnold's credit, he was sincerely the best during his peak (would have been nice to see him go up against a motivated oliva and nubret more often though).
