Opinions on Arnold's showing at the 1980 Mr. O
« on: March 09, 2008, 07:38:42 PM »
Hi guys.

I just finished re-watching Total Rebuild -The way to Mr.Olympia 1980. Arnold was cocky as hell in that documentary and clearly not very well liked by the other 1980 competitors, to the point that he had his SEPERATE room in the back to wait, while all the other competitors waited and joked around together. He, Franco and this other ass-kisser hung out in the back and it was apparent that he had NO legs and just appeared to thin to me and I thought it was an insult to the rest of the guys that Arnold works out for 8 weeks and takes the throne, when guys like Platz, Mentzer, Zane, etc... had been busting their ass ALL year to get their.

I know this is old news, but seeing how Jay took it last year, it's obvious that politics still take precedence in these kinds of competitions and the ultimate placings of the competitors.

Did any of you think that Arnold was worthy of 1st place and if not, where do you think he should have placed and why?

Peace.

Dickerson
Zane
Coe
Mentzer
Walker
Callender
Tinnerino
Maybe even Platz

All were better than Arnold that day

You sound like a bitter Mike Mentzer.  :D

And yes, I think Arnold's first place was worthy. The ONLY person that gave him a run for his money was Chris Dickerson.

Oh, and ummmm, peace.  ;D

74/75 was his best.

I'm going with '73 as his best condition.

I say 74 was his best year. He was MASSIVE and conditioned as fuck that year. I think it was his highest weight also. Something like 244 pounds? ND could confirm that for me if he wants to.

Arnold was booed for the first time in his life and I don't think he should have won. But nothing compares to the travesty that occurred the next year when Franco won. Padilla and Platz easily beat him. This was the greatest injustice ever. Even more so than Jay's last victory. Jay was simply not in top condition but he had no glaring weak points as far as muscular development. Franco had no legs (which accented his bow legs) and obvious gyno. The O is politics. I think the Arnold Clasic is a better contest to determine who has the better physique.

In 1981 I thought Platz should have won but that is just my preference. Padilla was more flawless and I would have been happy with him but I just thought Platz was more impressive. In 1980 I preferred Mentzer.

My opinion is that Arnold won, he was bigger and ahead of the pack, and along the way he made a bitch and a jealous freak out of Mentzer . Broke him physically and psychologically, inadvertently, Arnold was a good and kind champion.

close call. arnold lacked tibialis anterior and quad size compared to dickerson, but arnie owned him from the front upperbody. back double bis were about the same, if not going to dickerson. to be honest, i think everyone was expecting either dickerson, mentzer or zane to win and it would be pretty fair if any of them did. just happened to be arnold that day, for whatever reason. the scoresheet is very close... though i'm not sure if mike should be placed behind zane or coe.

From what I've seen I dont' think Arnie deserved that one, but they gave it to him cause he was the biggest "mainstream" name ever to step onstage at the olympia at that time...

This topic is as old as time itself. Everyone in their right mind knows damn well that Arnold had no business winning that show. He was still Joe's golden boy back then and knew that he had a strong chance of winning even if he showed up in less-than-stellar shape (which he did).

In the dvd "Arnold the early years" there's a rare pic gallery of the 80 Mr.O, where Arnold owns everybody in every single pic....

It'd be great if someone can get a hold of them and post them here.

I would say that Arnold probably just about shaded the decision in 1980. He certainly got there on his name but his physique was still good enough to be considered better than guys like Dickerson who were just starting thir competitive careers back then. All the other guys in that show were cut and in great shape but their height let them down and whenever they were stood next to Arnold with his height, chest size, and biceps peak, they didn't stand a chance.

Tom Platz was the biggest Arnold's ass kisser if you look closelly, I wish Dennis Tinerinno could come to this board and tell us some interesting episodes from that show,

Even Arnold himself (now) regrets entering the mr.O in 1980, but he's to proud (ego) to admit the real reasons...
He knows that 1980 is the only "stain in his jacket"in his bb carreer.

Back then there wasn't internet or anything like it, just Weider publications, and history belongs to those who write it" .

I have the GMV version of the 1980 its a must watch if your to have an opinion about the contest. Total rebuild shows nothing of the contest. That said Dickerson was the most complete, Zane was way off his best, and Mentzer had no chest. All 3 of those guys standing alone looked like they could have won. When they stood next to Arnold in the comparison round they were dwarfed both by height and size. He literally was head and shoulders above the pack. I don't blame Mentzers placing on his feud with Arnold I blame it on less than amateur level transitional posing. Mentzer could hit shots with the best of them but his transitions were horrible. He would completely relax and let everything hang out between shots and really began to look gassed very early and started to flatten out. Zane act looked better as the show went on but just couldn't hang with Arnold's size.

Wasn't Arnold causing a whole lot of fuss, by not voting with the other competitors to get rid of the weight classes, at one point?

The greatest injustice was Franco's nipple not even placing... that thing should have competed independently.
