Arnold was still dwarfing everyone.

Not Tinnerino

Certainly not in those back shots, Zane and Dickerson both are more complete, thicker and with more head-to-toe detail...

And, you have posted some photos showing Arnold clearly at positional advantage to show mass when few of the others are not.

lol, i know exactly what it is, but it seems that u may be misguided. here's a pic clearly illustrating what it is:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Tibialis_anterior_2.png

u can see it clearly on both of dickerson's lower legs in the shot that pollux posted. when it comes down to close decisions, things like that should matter, which is y i brought it up.

Close decisions is EXACTLY when things like that matter

Bill Pearl was not a judge at the 1980 O, Head Judge or otherwise. Bill Pearl recused himself as a judge because he said trained Dickerson for the show and said he could not be impartial.

As for ANY film or video (GMV, "The Comeback"), all the cheering was editied into the footage-edited in.

Arnold was widely booed off the stage at the O when he was announced the winner, and ran off the stage and called Maria a "bitch" because he was so upset. This was the first time he had ever been booed.

Vince Basile, who said he was there, said that the booing and cheering were both about the same. Charles Gaines, said there were heavy boos (and also witnessed Arnold calling Maria a "bitch", which is where that came from).

True.

In Arnold's rush to get away from the hoard of reporters and everyone else, Maria had lagged behind, chatting with ravenous reporters,,,,"Maria, you stupid bitch, let's get the fuck out of here..."

Gaines had marvelled at the fact that here was Arnold, who, some years earlier, did not have two schillings to rub together, calling a relative of one of the most powerful families in the world a 'stupid bitch'

It was a Fukin Lock Arnold knew he was going to win the big fix was that there was no prize money given to Arnold best 20k spent on a show. And If one Fukin Pro stepped on stage today with legs that weak you would all Burn Burn Burn. And like somebody has already said 81 was even worse. If you want a laugh look at the 1980 Olympia pics of Tony E and look at the MILK TITTIES.

Taken care of with his poor placing...unlike Franco's milk glands from 12981...worst Mr. O ever, bar NONE

Agree on both.

NEVER heard of anyone commenting on the tib anterior, and have never really looked at it in 20 years of judging.

I don't know if he loses ALL credibility, though....

i dont lose any credibility, unless you can show me that arnold's tibialis anterior muscles were better than dickerson's.

The crowd definitely booed the decision when Arnold was announced the winner. The booing gave way to cheers and he received a loud applause. Only Roger Walker, the local competitor, and Bev Francis received as much applause. Arnold was loudly cheered whenever he posed by himself. He was and is very popular in Australia because he came here several times and did posing and seminars.

I took the black and white prejudging photo above. I took 360 photos at the prejudging. I have access to them but don't have them in my possession. When I do I will start a thread to end all threads about that contest. When you view all those images you won't have any doubt about who was the best. It was close and many will argue that others deserved to win. In the end, it is just a matter of opinion in close contests.

Arnold got my nod but many of the bodybuilders gave it to Dickerson. No one down here told me Mike was the best. Heck, Dennis looked great, too, as did many of the top place getters. There was an embarrassing problem with having a junior judge for Australia because Peter McCarthy wasn't told when the judges meeting was and missed it. Only Paul Graham can explain why Brendan Ryan was selected. Brendan stayed with Arnold when he visited California. Ah, the good old days.

Like Jock Thompson used to say in Vancouver, "There is one winner, and everyone else is second!"

Look at Zane's back in the third pic. He was the best from the back and should have won that year. Period.

Dickerson
Zane
Coe
Mentzer
Walker
Callender
Tinnerino
Maybe even Platz

All were better than Arnold that day
Arnold was not at his best but still better than Mentzer,Mike just made the most noise.

How many of the Mr Os with more than 2 or 3 wins have had a gift given to them....all of them.Get over it, Arnold won and is still the best bodybuilder ever. 8)

Zane suffered a severe urethral puncture wound several weeks prior to the show, but still managed to come in close to his best, he was not 'way off' his best....

I remember reading in an IronMan article that featured Zane that, looking back, he shouldn't have competed in 1980. But, Arnold talked him into it. Later, he realized that Arnold did that for his own benefit, as his comeback would look better, if he beat the defending champion for the Olympia title.

Tom Platz was the biggest Arnold's ass kisser if you look closelly, I wish Dennis Tinerinno could come to this board and tell us some interesting episodes from that show,

Even Arnold himself (now) regrets entering the mr.O in 1980, but he's to proud (ego) to admit the real reasons...
He knows that 1980 is the only "stain in his jacket"in his bb carreer.

Back then there wasn't internet or anything like it, just Weider publications, and history belongs to those who write it" .

What has the internet got to do with Olympia placings?? Do you think fans actually have any say in an outcome?? NO

It was Arnold who was acting like a child during the heated exchange with Mentzer, who had the balls to challenge him

I was giving Mike Mentzer the moniker of "cry baby" based on his whining for his placing (5th) and the '80 Mr. Olympia experience as a whole, not the conflict between he and Arnold.

If Arnold never would've competed, everyone would've moved up a slot with Chris Dickerson winning, and Mike moving from 5th to 4th - STILL not in top 3 - and he STILL would've whined.

I agree in no way was Mike top 3, I almost think he over depleted trying to come in as cut as Zane. He was definitely having some issues cramping. As the night wore on he held his poses less and less. Any of you guys know if theres any truth behind Mentzer supposedly using amphetamines like speed for cutting?

I agree 100%.

Roger Walker could match Arnold in size, and came in good shape.

Plus I had just bought an Ironman Magazine that had Roger on the cover and I though he looked great.

I still have this magazine somewhere around my house.....

I've seen the comeback quite a few times.

Every time I see Roger Walker on stage next to Arnold...I can't believe how much harder, well developed, & defined Roger looks compared to Arnold.  And then he places 6th?

Doesn't make sense

Yes.

Zasne later had lunch with Arnold, and asked him why he urged him to compete despite his injury.

"C'mon, Frank," Arnold said. "It's competition-there are no friendships when there is competition."

The words qwere something to that effect.

Ultimately, Zane understood and came to terms with it.

Yeah-that's likely right. It especially seems true given Mentzer's subseqwuent fall from sanity and the unfortunate course of his life after that period.

Yes. 129812 wqas probably bb's darkest hour. Utterly a silly decision. Can't find hardly any photos and certainly no video from that showq...that's for sure.
