Arnold bashing on Yates....

I remember reading in MuscleMag circa 1997, an article with Arnold about he state of affairs.Arnold was bashing on Yates saying he was the worse Mr Olympia ever, not only physically but the worse rep for the sport. Arnold being quoted something like

 "[..] A Mr Olympia who trains in a dungeon and doesn't do any promotion, who the f**k is this guy? Nobody really knows, he simply shows up every year and disappears with the most prestigious title. A loss for bodybuilding [..]"


Anyone remember that?

I don't recall A being so harsh, but, to be fair, I'd say Arnold would be considered more out of touch with the state of affairs of bb than any current or former Mr. O of the past 20 years

I dont remember the exact words, but I remember Arnold said something that bugged Yates....later someone asked Yates what he thought of it and he just replied with "Arnold who?"

arnold is obviously saddened by the state of bbing for the past 15 years or so. not one olympia besides arnold has had much tv, radio or internet coverage. he's right, what a sad day for the sport, when the guy that wins the olympia - biggest prize in bb and (seemingly) most marketable guy FOR bb - hides away for 12 months until the next competition. and they wonder y bb isnt on ppv anymore.

Yep Arnold was totally jealous, there was actually a few BB who boycotted his show do it.

Lee Haney was quite popular in the 80's. He had a mainstream show on ESPN I believe, but nowhere nearly the Icon that Arnold was.

He did say something like that, and that they looked "cartoonish with their baggy clothes and big water jugs and smelling like protein from 50 meters away".

But Arnold, Jealous of all this? No way. Not capable. He is happy to distance himself from the bufoonery that is bb today.

Oh yea I remember the clothing crack.... but he was right... fuckign early 90's clowns walking around with Rex-Won-Do pants, string tank and Otomix all days was and still is a disgrace.

doubt it. look at the style guys wore in the 50's, 60's and 70's... then compare it to the early 90's to present day. very few bbs ever wear suits or smart clothing in public (that we see) apart from a precontest meeting.

Quite the contrary on every point actually. He was correct on everything mentioned; it was refreshing candor from him. Basically as far as the physiques it was something about having departed from the ideals of former generations in general, Yates in particular. That was aside from the remarks about the clothing and lugging water around.

wearing clown pants, gallon water bottle, string tank (or just regular tanktop) everywhere u go, 24/7 says u workout for a living and are dictated by ur muscles, wanting to show them off and look like u just came from or are heading to the gym.

wearing suits, polo shirts and pants with a belt says u can relate to many topics, outside of ur bulging biceps. moosejay is right in the way that ppl over 18 will want to look and act like u, as smart clothes = intelligence and sophistication.

yeah I remember that too, there was some bad blood between the two, Arnold thought Yates was unsofisticated and when on official
Mr Olympia business he should wear a suite and all.

In that same article Arnold thought they should bring back some acrobatic elements to bodybuilding shows, such as handstands, like the old-timers did. I thought that was a bit silly.

Classless move by Arnold, typical egotistical attitude.

Yates was the greatest Mr. Olympia of all-times regarding the physique he presented at his best.

At least Yates had the class to acknowledge that Arnold achieved his goals and cut the conversation short at that (seminar video is available on Google). Maybe Arnold should have recognized that Yates accomplished all his goals and had no desire (or obligation) to do anymore.
