This guy started his little thing with with wife's pie pans...  I too would like to know what the energy input is and they failed to mention that.  But who knows, it's an interesting direction for sure.  Maybe there's just the right efficiency frequency?  Still looks like something worth further experimentation.  In the end, I posted it mainly because it's kinda neato and does make one wonder of the possibilities--that is all...

You don't need expensive metals, I've seen some people do it with a fairly small amount of electricity and two spatulas.  But this is cool for the reason you stated, we do need to know what the power input is.  I also really wonder about these laws of electrolysis from highschool...  I have seen guys hook up electrolysis units the size of a coffee can or smaller in their old clunkers, place a tank of water in the trunk and feed the gas right into their combustion mix with good results.  They were still running gas but got a very real increase in the mpg unlike some myths we hear about.  The problem is that the hydrogen/oxygen brown gas will eventually really fuck your engine, so IMO it's really only good to play with on a junker.  Now there are engines that are built to take hydrogen but they are expensive.  there are also places that say they will convert your engine to burn hydrogen but that is expensive.  Plus with this type of setup I speak of, I guess there is a huge compression problem to deal with so you can't just run the brown gas alone unless you want to putter around on 25 horse power   Anyway, to make my point/query, the electrolysis production worked very well just off of the car battery/alternator. The unit is very cheap to make or buy for anyone who has a junker they feel like dinking around with.

Ultimately, the power for transportation will come from electricity, whether it be directly from electric batteries (tesla motors, chevy volt, etc) or from hydrogen produced by electric hydrolysis.  Either way it takes oil out of the equation, which eliminates the threats to our economy and security.

The electricity can then be produced either the way it is now (combo of coal (50%), Natural Gas (25%), Nuclear (19%) and other (Hydro, renewables)),  or we can move to where I think we'll ultimately be, which is a combo of nuclear for primary power demands, hydro where it exists now, and rooftop-mounted solar for residential and supplemental.

Do you think the hydrogen explosion would be less than the fuel/air explosion......relating to compression??
