MD's Per Bernal speaks on Phil Heath cover photoshop claims
« on: March 26, 2008, 11:02:28 AM »
There has been a lot of reaction online on MUSCULARDEVELOPMENT.COM in regards of the latest MD cover with Phil Heath taken at this years Iron man Show. Most are positive but a lot of people are shouting “foul and photoshopped”, not believing what they are seeing. But sometimes the truth could be to good to be true w hen circumstances are perfect; and executed by the best bodybuilding photographer in the industry! See below what MD's ace photographer has to say about the truth behind the photoshoot.

Lightning - The stage lightning at the Iron Man show is known to be the best in the business.

Condition - At the day of the show Phil Heath presented the best package in his career so far. Perfect condition, muscularity, shape and tan.

Planning – The cover image of Phil Heath, at the request of Steve Blechman, was created three weeks prior to the show. That’s when it was decided by Steve to put a most muscular shot of Phil Heath on the cover page of MD, if he won the Iron Man, together with a pictorial inside.

Technology – With access to one of the best camera and lens technologies of today, optimal image result is made possible.

Execution – A good seat and nearly 20 years as a professional photographer is a good start when trying to capture the right moment.

Visualization – The cover photo of Phil Heath is originally a color image. By visualizing and balancing highlights, mid tones and shadows at the time of exposure it´s possible to digitally prepare for black & white files with an impressive tonal range.

Photoshop – Adobe Photoshop is an integral part of photography. But not in the way you might think. It´s a great tool that can be used to express your unique vision of an image. To give it a custom look when it comes to different effects etc. Through certain techniques I have been able to bring out details in the cover shot of Phil Heath that normally are not disclosed to the eye. This creates an image with great detail and sharpness combined with an extended tonal range and that to some looks too morphed and exaggerated. But the truth lies in the eye of the beholder. What do you see?!!!

Best Regards, Per Bernal

Yes, of course it was photoshopped. Mr. Blechman like his muscle hunks to shine on the cover.

Best Regards, Per Bernal
