obama's talking about the economy
« on: March 27, 2008, 07:05:18 AM »
first instance of specifics i've heard from him... geez, it's like a textbook up there.  i'm guessing the media will dissect his speech all day.  he's fumbled a few words, and lacking that normal shine/ambience that he exudes.

but, it's good to hear him talking about fixing the mortgage mess.  boring speech, but important.

Let me guess he "promises" change?

Guys a quack, needs to quit promising everything under the sun.

the transcript and feedback should be interesting.  he didn't speak using the dreamy terminology he normal uses... it was pretty bland, very complex... not something to energize the crowds, but something to reassure voters he's focusing on the economy and the real estate crunch.

This is one of the first times he's done that. He's having a hard time in Penn, where people want a solid plan, not dreamy speeches. Hil has come in with her plans etc and voters can atleast point to something solid.

I have an MBA and watch 3 hours of CNBC every day... I don't consider myself smart by any means, but at least aware of this stuff.... and a few parts of this speech were above my head lol.. pretty good stuff.  Hopefully it'll answer some Qs...  I'd like to see the 3 strongest canddiates running with the strongest possible plans.

About three weeks ago, Hillary’s lead in the RealClearPolitics average was nine percent. Now it is 16 percent.

Madonna notes that from mid-February to mid-March, Obama lost ten points of favorability in a state in which he did only a little bit of campaigning. Some of that was due to sharper attacks from Hillary Clinton (particularly the “3 a.m.” ad), but a healthy chunk of is probably fallout from Wright. What’s more, it’s not clear how quickly Obama can earn back that trust. “His speech probably didn’t make much difference with the blue-collar, white, working-class Democrats — they’re more interested in ‘show me’,’ not ‘give me a speech.’”

A poster at the liberal blog MyDD broke down the Democratic electorate in Ohio into six different groups, adjusted the proportion to reflect the likely turnout in Pennsylvania’s Democratic primary, and calculated a 57 percent to 43 percent victory for Hillary. ‘The analysis suggests that it is not unthinkable that Obama could win only one or two counties.

‘‘Obama has time to address the flaws in his campaigns’ pitch to those key demographics. But so far, Public Policy Polling has Obama losing the white-Democrat vote, 63 percent to 23 percent. Quinnipiac has Hillary leading among white voters, 61 percent to 33 percent.

A catastrophic loss among these groups would leave the super-delegates facing an even tougher choice than before, suggesting that Obama, the candidate most likely to finish with more regular delegates, cannot close the deal with key groups of Democratic voters, even with six weeks to hone his pitch.

His plan....

Expand oversight to any institution that borrows from the government.

_Toughen capital requirements for complex financial instruments like mortgage securities.

_Streamline regulatory agencies to end overlap and competition among regulators.

While he laid out a half-dozen principles for closer scrutiny of the financial markets, he offered no specifics, such as which agencies should be reorganized or exactly how the government should go about peering over the shoulders of bank executives.

Mccains' response....

McCain said in a statement, "there is a tendency for liberals to seek big government programs that sock it to American taxpayers while failing to solve the very real problems we face."

Hil is coming out with one shortly but her past speeches on this have had more specifics. I still wonder why we are being forced to bail out folks who bought above their heads...or companies that made loans to people that they knew would eventualy have issues paying off.

I have used several arms in the past because being military....i move within 3 years and never face the balloon payments after 5. Still mine where a .5 percent raise with a base rate of under 4.5 to start with. Some people are facing a rate at 12%. I feel bad but they knew what the rate would be when they signed up.

Language like that... McCain should be better than that.

I know it makes Rush and Hannity all warm and happy to label people are liberals... but when Mccain was holding hands with Teddy Kennedy talking about forgiving all the illegal immigrants, the term 'liberal' applied to him pretty directly.

He's making certain segments feel better. Obama knows what he is.

It is not fair to call McCain a liberal.  It is more accurate to say he has liberal and conservative stances on various issues.  Overall, he is more conservative than liberal.  Though he is thought of as liberal compared to many in the republican party.

Overall, Ted Bundy met a lot more people he didn't kill.  But, he's known for those that he butchered.

McCain was called a lib by his own party.  That stink is hard to drop.

haha, I see what your saying but overall he is more conservative than liberal when you sum everything up.  He is liberal within the context of the rebuplican party but not outside of it.  Ok, at least you must agree that he is far less liberal than Obama or Hillary.  (The amnesty bill with Kennedy is still something that sends chills...)
