I've more than a few German friends and acquaintances and they try very hard.  Goodness, that language they have to grow up with !

One girly I know, Jana, (who did her Uni in England and graduated with high honours), went on to produce that awful show with the guy who cuts up bodies, what's his name?  Some German scientist surgeon.  Hope she just did the translation.


Some have a wicked sense of humour, kinda slow, but...  funny words.



Today there was a news story on the BBC regarding German frockensheld (sp).  Fruenshite? 
Ends with switch.

I only studied Latin, French and Spanish, so forgive me.


Maybe you're just going topical?  Is it some kind of Allemande Anniversary?  Because today was wonderful in London, it was the RAF's massive do.

Big fly past with the Red Arrows and a few WWII planes.  Right over my house.  Incredible.  Celebration.

Flypast marks RAF's anniversary
Red Arrows 90th anniversary formation
The Red Arrows and Typhoons flew along the River Thames

The Red Arrows have flown over central London to mark the 90th anniversary of the Royal Air Force (RAF).

The aerobatics team flew in formation with four Typhoons along the River Thames, past Canary Wharf and Tate Modern, to the London Eye.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown paid tribute to the RAF as the sound of the jet engines overhead threatened to drown out his monthly press conference.

North London's RAF Museum is hosting a banquet for Air Force chiefs.

The RAF was formed when the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service merged on 1 April, 1918.

The flypast could be heard in 10 Downing Street, where Mr Brown broke off from his press conference to pay tribute to the RAF. He also praised the Territorial Army (TA), which marks its 100th anniversary today.

Marching display

"We congratulate both the RAF and the TA on their huge achievements for the country," the prime minister said.

The Duke of Edinburgh was due to attend Tuesday's banquet at the museum near Hendon. During the event there will be a flypast of nine Eurofighters and a Spitfire as well as a marching display by the Queen's Colour Squadron and the Central Band of the RAF.

An RAF spokeswoman said "low-key" celebrations, including a sunset ceremony, would be held in held in Afghanistan and Iraq to mark the occasion.

I have an historic thing about Germans, sorry. 


90pc of the males in my family died or were maimed in WW1. 

And as for the second WW, my father went to Singapore as an engineer on an aircraft carrier (he thankfully joined the Navy) when he was 17 and that war ended when he got there, so he came home, got over it, met my Mum and I got made when he was 40.

One other male member of my family survived.  The rest died in France.


So, sorry, my history on this topic is somewhat biased.

I took German for 4 years in HS.  I can count perfectly  but thats about it.  I know short phrases.  My brother married a german girl and flew 40 of her friends and relatives over to California from Germany for their wedding.  Her brother worked as a paramedic and got hit by a car on the autobahn going well over 100mph while he was working on someone.  He got fucked up really bad but lived.  I am part German as my mom was German/Irish

I'm of German descent too.  I don't know about you, but that first pic in the thread made me break out in a cold sweat.  :-X
