Rolling shoulders for shrugs...
« on: March 31, 2008, 04:54:17 PM »
Is it me, or it this utterly pointless.  It always seems to be the guy blasting the 60's, who really focus on rolling their shoulders back.  I'm pretty sure this isn't great for your rotator cuffs.  I never roll my shoulders and my traps are pretty decent...strange? ;)

I finally agree with you.  I hate it when I see guys do it this way.  The movement is just like when you shrug your shoulders when you say "I don't know".

Kevin Levrone always rolled his shoulders while shrugging. Dumbell or Barbell.

Then Levrone suffered rotator cuff injuries that you have not heard about...or he was very lucky.

The best way to activate trapezoid muscle fibers and avoid 'working your joints' is to bring your shoulders up and back, and then straight down again. The motion varies a bit person to person, but circular motions can be very destructive.

Doesn't mean much.  Most pros have horrid form, half reps, etc.  They don't grow because of their "technique".

Rolling the shoulders simply doesn't hit anything better, therefore...pointless.

they grow because they receive unlimited supplements each month.  Imagine how big you'd be if you could eat 5 tubs of creatine each month, Croatch!

Battle for the Olympia 2000: Kevin Levrone's segment - he roll shrugs.  ;)

For sure, but it doesn't mean much.  I'd be sure that it leads to more injuries, than better trap development...that's the point.

Tell that to Levrone...and he wasn't doing no 60's in M3.

Levrone would not be able to argue with basic anatomical science and biomechanics.

Agreed. On the way up, if you bring your shoulders back just a smidge, you will involve more posterior trapezoid and middle rhomboid fibers.

Battle for the Olympia 2000: Flex Wheeler's segment - dips chin into chest.  ;)

Levrone shrugged while rolling his shoulders with 500 plus pounds in his DVD, He had some of the best traps in the sport. He never had shoulder problems that Im aware of. He did behind the neck presses with 400lbs on the smith machine too. Most people would have joint trouble from those two movements. Levrone did what worked for him and he came out ok.

Yes, but those results are anomalous, if, indeed, he did come out without injuries.

Rolling your shoulders is probably the worst thing you can do to your shoulders. I see these high school kids that pop dbols like tic tacs at the gym doing that shoulder roll.

Levrones traps would have been a lot smaller in M3 if he took less drugs.
