Abosorption Rate on Transdermals
« on: April 03, 2008, 09:25:45 AM »
I have used transdermal creams and gels a couple times for HRT.  The pharmacy told me the absorption rate was 10% and all literature indicates about the same for transdermals (androgel, testim, etc)

A new HRT clinic in Florida told me they have a cream (200 mg/ml) that has an absorption rate of 50%, I know I read an article in MD about a year ago that an Australian company was developing a new cream with an absorption rate about that high.  Has anyone here ever heard of a transdermal with an absorption rate as high as 50% or do you think this guy is just confused?

ive never heard of one with a 50% absorption rate, but that doesnt mean they dont exist.  i doubt it though

Yeah, 50% is a new one on me for any drug, especially hormones.  I know there are a few that have a sustained release higher rates, but its over several days, not in a 24 hour period.

Absorption rate really depends on the carrier and the degree of vascularity in a given area----for instance the pecs will have a different absorption rate than the inner thigh than the arms. Thats why most of the HRT type topicals have instructions to apply to the arms, delts, or abdomen.  Adding something like DMSO may increase absorption, but thats not necessarily the case with a hormone already in solution vs using DMSO as the solvent because you can end up with opposing hydrophobic substances.

One thing I've wondered is doing something like applying the transdermal to one shoulder/upper arm one day, the next arm the next day and the abdomen the third day.  Of course, you'd probably have to go for 3 days without showering, but in theory you should get more absorption over that 3 day period from the first application.

A way to increase absorption is to apply on the scrotum LOL. Dramatically increased absorption. I think there is some issue with too much conversion to DHT though.

Anyway, I tend to doubt the 50%. You'd think that would mean it's harsh on the skin if that much is getting through.
