Problem is that the 'right to selfdefense' is often used to shoot first and ask questions later, the term is too ambiguous for many.
A society in which there's about a gun per inhabitant will see more gun incidents (accidental or not) than a society where there's 1/100 gun per capita. That's just the law of numbers.
I think disarmament is too late for the US now, I do think the States would have been better of without them.
oh and the argument that 'armed' is the normal state of mankind is utter bullcrap. Although history is riddled with wars and strifes, most of the time there was actually a state of peace, the general population, except in some extreme situations, was unarmed.
Edit: ontopic, RIP Ben Hur, Heston/is was considered an arrogant and vain man and a mediocre actor among his peers. Very much suited for the larger-than-life roles he played in the 50's and 60's, he lacked finesse and empathy to deal with more human roles.
