The Olympic thing... How do you spell hypocrasy?
« on: April 08, 2008, 09:59:53 AM »
Protests have only taken place so far in London Paris and San Francisco, but what is going on?  At first i thought protests were democracy and the way things ought to be, but now I must begin to wonder what on earth will happen in Beijing.

And it's coming to London in 2012?  This Sports event is turning into turmoil.

Free Tibet.

I've been to endless gigs for that for the last 20 years but it got us nowhere.

But ought we forget the politics and wars etc. and instead concentrate on the hardworking athletes who've waited 4 years?

I think the US should register its protest by sitting out these Olympics.

Surely not.  The athletes have trained for 4 years.

But We must protest against China's unlawful takeover of Tibet.

Go fetch the Dalai Lama?

He should carry the torch (although I'm sure he didn't forsee or plan on having the Games in China this year.

When it comes to London next, let's hope it's sorted.

edit:  hey, I googled US headlines to find this fab pic of the Golden Gate Bridge and learn that Richard Gere is getting involved.  Can't wait to see what he has to say...

At the very least we will not play nice with such a brutal regime.

Who's with me?  Come on all you Iraq War supporters!  Where are your stones now for toppling oppressive murderous regimes?

I'd LOVE to see us play hard ball with those bastards.

It's a pity our government sold us out to them.

Akin to our relations with Saudi Arabia, our relation to China must be in such a way that we overlook and often ignore their blatant human rights and environmental abuses.  We are in too deep financially with them.  So deep that it is now impossible for the US to declare any standard of morality for the rest of the world to behold.

Meanwhile, Tibet is disappearing.  China is inflicting nothing less than cultural genocide on a people with rich traditions and culture.  China is destroying Tibet from both within and without, attacking the culture, oppressing the people, and even the genes with massive unchecked immigration.  Tibet is, for the time being, a breadbasket for the region with dense forests and rich in natural resources.  Now, the many rivers flowing throughout are filled to the brim with fallen timber as deforestation continues.  Huge amounts of Chinese squatters and their corporate benefactors move in by the tens of thousands to set up polluting factories.  Where there was once landmarks, natural areas, and small businesses now stand massive concrete block apartments that house those same illegal immigrants that continue to pour into the country unchecked, unaware, and uncaring.

This will be a continuing theme with China as that nation, admired for it's newfound industrial strength and might, is unable or unwilling to better the life of its people and its environment unlike Europe, Japan, the US, and Australia.  Almost 400 of China's 600 rivers are polluted beyond use and several of its cities are shrouded in a perpetual cloud of toxic industrial chemicals and smog.  It is in China's interest to invade and strip neighboring countries of their natural resources to keep feeding this irresponsible industrial giant.

Why worry about Tibet when we have starving people here in the USA?
Why worry about Tibet when we have people killed in random violence here everyday in the USA?

Why worry about some place on the other side of the world when we have our own probs here?

is it just cool and en vogue to support an exotic cause like brad Pitt does?

(Don't worry, there are millions of protesters against Britain's involvement in that illegal war in Iraq).  This is not the issue though.

We're discussing whether or not athletes ought to have to give up the dream they've trained for day and night, for 4 or 8 years, for a political issue.

>Whether or not the flame travels from London to Paris then to SF (what's that about, how'd they decide go zigzag from London to Paris then fly to California?  is a minor issue, >>>but I'm loving the colourful protests.

...The Games here in London in 2012 either won't happen or will be amazing.

Clear it up for me.  Tell me in one sentence what is happening in Tibet.  Then tell me why it's more inportant to you than any crime or cause in England.

The athletes can have the World championships and other titles.  They should feel proud to take a stand against such inhumane cruelty and mass murder.
But yet they are american, and will only think of themselves and will go to show support for China by attending...

I believe the US is on a path to domination and communistic practices anyway.

Well, you would wouldn't you (as the actress said to the politician)...

But I've decided I'm more than pissed off about this.  It's like everyone has an "issue" to all of a sudden get out and protest against.  Like we didn't before?

World has gone mad.

But (getting back to the topic), where is the Olympic torch going next?  Can't wait.

Is there another Olympic thread?  sorry my scrolling finger is taking a minute to recover.

Okay, You're in SF and the thing the day previous was the pre-demo.  I've just caught up.

Watched a news discussion show this morning.  Obviously this thing is a big deal in England because it's coming here next and they've already spent 17 thousand billion on the infrastructure.  It's going to cost every one of us taxpayers in this country so very much money.
So it must work out okay.

Anyways, nowadays I can't bear the BBC news, it's all "And what do you think about this?" sitting on a sofa a la Americans nowadays.

So I prefer to watch a discussion show.  They're slightly un-PC and discuss what people really think.  And this morning, they did a topic on the hypocrasy we're all experiencing.

We buy our computers, telephones, trainers, toys and cheap clothes from China.  So, is this all a big fraud or is this a wonderful chance for everyone to stand up and say, yeah, okay, I'll pay a buck for that, but I'm not having your disgusting regime?

I haven't looked at the evening news yet.
xL

They were saying we should've given Australia back to the Aborigines and America back to the Natives (if there are any left...

I still think it must be about sportsmen who have trained for ever to attain the ultimate goal.
Damn Beijing.

Boycotts never help anybody.

I spent most of the last three years in Hong Kong.  China is on the right track.... they just need more exposure to Westerners/our better values.

I loved surfing Chinese internet forums.  They know the value of free speech/markets.

Some of you may remember the wonderful photographs of the 3 black guys standing up on the podium, 1st 2nd and 3rd, fists held high?  The Black Panthers?  Many many years ago.  My Dad told me about it, he was blown away and showed me the photos years later, when I was old enough to understand (he was mixed race Indian).

Those guys changed the world, they fixed aparthied (sp).

Obviously Mandela helped in the 30 years afterward.

Waaa,  did you know that Hong Kong was a British Colony?  And that we recently handed it back to China with enormous fanfare?

Did you think China was another world (just across the water from HongKong), or did you instead think that they all looked the same?  Hope you enjoyed your 3 years in the Orient and left it looking good.

Or instead left a great impression of American ignorance.

edit:  sorry that was extremely rude of me, you're probably very (maybe too) young.  forgive me.  Let's return to the topic, I'm gonna turn the TV on, what happened in SF today?  The news in England is difficult to cope with.  xL
