Proper deadlifting technique.
« on: April 17, 2008, 01:02:35 AM »

I used perfect form on Tuesday.  Just as I suspected I lifted as much as I usually do and will likely end up lifting more than ever as I continue to practice my perfect form.  I got the same shakiness that Steve did in the clip above.  What is the cause of that?

HAHAHA!!  I wish.

My short term goal is 465 for three similar quality reps.  Does the deadlift suit help though?  Personally I don't think straps do if chalk is used.

More traffic here.  Plus I've seen threads a lot more irrelevant than this one get posted here.  ;D

lose the straps, get lower in the lift to take load off of back and use legs more, rake the bar up the shins to keep it close.

Are you saying Steve has a suit on there? I can't tell. If he does it's not helping because it's not tight. I get a good amount from a suit. At least 25lbs on regular deads.

if you are shaking you have either used too much weight or have not warmed up properly.

I agree, he should be starting with his thighs nearly parallel to the ground.  The deadlift is difficult to master.  Ideally you want your back and your shins to be parallel at all times through the lift.  This is simple geometry and physics...as your angle at the back of the knee goes from 90 degrees to 180 degrees, the angle between your torso and your thighs should match.
This maximizes the mechanical advantage and is the most efficient form for the lift.

Very cool exercise - I had major back pain for years.
After starting to deadlift my back feels fine and stable.

Former United States Olympic Weight Lifting Coach Jim Schmitz advises that the hips start higher than the knees, and lower than the shoulders. So lowering your ass according to him isn't a proper deadlift

you're right, Louie Simmons said the same things, the two most common mistakes are starting with the back too high and starting too low, you need the be in between, Kuclo looked to be in the right position the weight was just too heavy that's why he shook so much, the second and third reps are easier due to momentum and bouncing SLIGHTLY off the floor, Steve is BRUTALLY strong but he should have left that 25 plate off and just gone with 585, he'd have done that perfectly.

The one known as "Matt C." seeks levels of accomplishment not meant for for men of his humble character. Perhaps the pursuit of beggar or tailor is more suited to Lesser men of his common heritage.

Match my own Herculean efforts on the deadlift and you will earn, perhaps, the slightest shade of my respect.

exactly it is either due to having sh*t form or trying to lift a weight that's too heavy.  I'm all for improving strength but not at the sacrifice of injury

When your second and third reps are faster than your first, it means you're doing something wrong.

what he's doing is getting a slight bounce off the floor but that is in no way slighting his strength, he is EXTREMELY strong on everything for every bodypart.

I didn't say he's weak, just that when your first rep takes six seconds and the next two are quick, you need to work on how you're doing things before you hurt yourself. Lighten the weight and go to a dead stop between reps. He'd "only" be doing six plates then.

yep that's exactly what i said in a previous post, 585 would have come up without any hitching or shaking on the first and he could have truly paused the reps slightly on the floor.
