Maltodextrin vs Splenda
« on: April 17, 2008, 02:49:18 PM »
Do any of you competitors consume products containing maltodextrin at any time during the year?

If yes, would you ever choose it over Splenda for your sweetener?

Maltodextrin is not sweet, its very very bland, and it contains no sugar.Sweetening your stuff with Maltodextrin is like saying , I use flour to sweeten things you eat.Because Maltdextrin is about as bland as flour.
As far as Carbs go, use Waxey Maize Starch, its so much better then Maltodextrin. If you cant afford Waxey Maize Starch, you can use Frodex, which is preet dam good carb

why would you pay extra for carbs when they're everywhere?  what does waxey maize starch provide that you can't get from say a banana or oatmeal, or bread, or pasta, or a potato, or rice, or OJ, or a corn tortilla?

Thanks for the tip about the WMS and Frodex.

Regarding the maltodextrin, although there are derivatives that are bland, it is pretty sweet and is often used as a sweetener in the diets of those who are fighting diabetes, for example.

Right, it has a natural base, which is key, because the body can safely metabolize it.

Regular sugar rocks, but we're trying to try calories wherever possible. :)

sucralose is like 1000 times sweeter than regular sugar and it has zero calories (SUCRALOSE, not splenda)

Just so you know, Splenda contains Maltodextrin.

The main ingredient in Splenda is 'Sucalose'.

Splenda packets are supposed to be equal to 'one teaspoon' of sugar in sweetness. However, Sucralose is 600 times sweeter than sugar. So if they just put the Sucralose in the little packet, you probably wouldn't even be able to see it because it would be such a little amount. So they add Dextrose and Maltodextin to the mix (very little though, just enough to give it substance).

Didn't read it first, sorry :)

BTW, it says "less than a gram", but we all know that's just as good as a gram (unless you're buying Crack of course) ;)

I like http://trueprotein.com because I can buy protein without any added sweeteners.  all the name brands I find too sickly sweet.

FLAVOR Buddy.....FLAVOR!!!!!

Most people like to have a great tasting shake. I for one have a major sweet tooth.

Some people just do not like sweet.

so you mix the protein powder with milk or juice or yogurt or flavored sparkling water, add some fruit, psyllium, flaxseed oil, etc.

HARDCORE!!   ;D

Thanks for the info, everyone.

Living in the western U.S., I've seen people going Splenda-crazy the last few years, but apparently, one of the scare tactics used to frighten people away from sucralose-sweetened products is to focus on the fact that it contains chlorine.

We switched to the maltodextrin ourselves a few weeks ago based on several blind taste tests, but even though it consistently beat Splenda on flavor, I didn't know whether the people who want non-sugar sweeteners would demand Splenda 'just because'.
