« on: April 23, 2008, 07:08:45 PM »
NEW YORK, April 23 (Reuters) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc’s  Sam’s Club warehouse division said on Wednesday it is limiting sales of several types of rice, the latest sign that fears of a rice shortage are rippling around the world.

Sam’s Club, the No. 2 U.S. warehouse club operator, said it is limiting sales of Jasmine, Basmati and long grain white rice “due to recent supply and demand trends.”

U.S. rice futures hitting an all-time high Wednesday on worries about supply shortages.

On Tuesday, Costco Wholesale Corp  the largest U.S. warehouse club operator, said it has seen increased demand for items like rice and flour as customers, worried about global food shortages and rising prices, stock up

I think I read they were limited to 4 twenty pound bags.

That's still a heck of a lot of rice

depends on how you see it, If told someone this a few years back they would have laughed, if you told someone this 15 years ago, they would have said, WTF won't happen.  You could get a hundred pound bag for 15-20 bucks.  anyway, with the amount of poor around the world that count on this stuff, it's an indicator of serious shit imo.

well bum does live in Hawaii and I live in Northern CA (which I think is pretty damn nice).

The shitstorm is on the horizon though.

I'm not too confident the govt can (or wants to do anything about it)

Fuck - Bush wasn't even aware of the high cost of gas as of ~ 2 months ago and when asked his only comment was "that's interesting".

Then again - A Bush solution is on the way and all our economic woes will be a thing of the past.

I've spent time in both.  No comparison.  Northern Cal is a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there.

But I can't even see the mountains this morning.  The vog is terrible.  Somebody put a lid on that dang volcano.   >:(

No doubt Hawaii is nice but I'd prefer to visit it occassionally rather than live there.

Yeah, who needs clean air (except for today), breathtaking mountains and ocean, 82-85 degree weather year round, beautiful people, safe streets and neighborhoods, etc., etc.   :)

There is that whole money/expense thing, but it isn't much different than most big cities, including places like S.F., L.A., and S.D.

lol.  No they don't.

But S.F. is the gay capital of the U.S., so I completely understand why you'd rather live there than paradise.

Weird that you are gay-bashing, and you are by FAR the person who starts the most gay-marriage threads here.

It's always the loudest ones that keep the secrets, eh? ;)

I hear you.  I wouldn't want to live with all of the dense, humorless, pot smoking, paranoid, anti-religious extremists in S.F.  Not you of course, but all those other ones.

the only part that fits is anti-religious which is more aptly described as anti-superstition or maybe just pro-intelligence.

Actually I look at religious people the same way I look at gays - I don't get it but I also don't give a shit ....until you start forcing your belief upon me.

So far no gay people have tried to force their beliefs on me but I can't say the same about the religious kooks

BTW - I'm sure your little island puffs at least as much herb as Cali but then you knew that already

incredible quote there.

I have never had a gay person push their lifestyle on me.

But once a week, like clockwork, I have to answer the door and tell the jehoviahs witnesses that I'm not interested.

However Straw, public schools have began pushing the gay agenda on YOUR children.  What do you think about that?

Also....how the fuck is there a food shortage?  Did soil conditions get worse?  Is food output worse?  I don't see how, as more and more people are dying of starvation so surely bulks of food can't possibly be going over there.  And why does the US need food exports anyways?  We can grow and more than adequately feed our entire population with more than enough left over to import.

this is all mainstream news... drudge, cnn, Ny times, NY sun, WSJ:

wall street journal encouraged people to stock up.
UN Chief said bad things ahead.
several countries (brazil, USSR, argentina) stopped all food exports.
gas/oil prices up.
Food riots in haiti/egypt, elsewhere.
CNN reporting that many people are hoarding, Sams/Costco rationing rice.

I don't know what to make of it.

I think the gay agenda is more about learning tolerance for the choices of other people and trying to understand that people are different.

If our society has to tolerate other peoples religious beliefs then those religious people have to tolerate other people non-religious beliefs.

This goes for all reglions except radical Islam for which I think there's very little hope of mutual tolerance.

I think the problem with food is more of rising costs than actual shortage (though I haven't paid much attention to this either).

Rising fuel costs are effecting everything
