sandow dumbells
« on: April 26, 2008, 03:39:37 PM »
i have a set of dumbells made in the 1890's by Eugene Sandow. (the Sandow trophy presented to Mr. Olympia is of him). also the box they were shipped to north America in in the 1890's and the training programs and booklets that came with them. not really gossip or opinion, but i thought they'd be viewed alot more on here before mods recatagorize the post.

I can tell those "weights" were the main reason for his mass gains.

the smart thing was, shipping was exorbitant back then, so he came up with a gimmick so that people would buy them instead of using rocks or soup cans. marketing was in place that long ago, the pamphlets talked about the spring grips causing an increase in will power.

I know what a freak ;), this was written a few years ago but he has 17 kids! No wonder he keeps working LOL

He stayed at the market until 1920 – the same year he got married, fathered his first of 17 children and joined the navy, before transferring to the army. He left the forces in 1955 and went back to the market where he stayed until 2004 – the year of his retirement.

wow, really cool Hazbin. I love the real old "iron age" things like the old globe dumbbells and barbells and the inch dumbbells. Really interesting stuff.
No doubt about it...

the pamphlet with them says they are built to last a lifetime, and unlike garauntees of today they definately understated.

Hey Haz.

My girlfriend got me the following off e-bay:

The same sandow db's you have...in a metal tin and a polishing rag that came along with it

A coin commemorating purchase of Sandow's cocoa, which was bought out by a company that became Nestle

And, the best piece mint condition chest/spring expander, in original box, and has wooden handles with red-ink sandow signatures on each!
