Like you say the etiology is unknown. Steroids do affect immunity though so maybe steroids could trigger it. Who knows?
i would highly suggest it has a th1-th2 polarization with early life lack of endotoxins being part of the complex etiology. MAP bacteria and general dysbiosis have been implicated. Also high levels of circulating TNF-a are certainly an issue perhaps secondary to the low levels of il-10 and cAMP.

I read something about Th2 cytokine profile being associated with colitis. And that androgens promote a Th2 cytokine profile. I don't really understand the science though.
