Are you a "fan" of bodybuilding?
« on: May 10, 2008, 07:02:22 AM »
A surprising number of guys on getbig (and similar BB boards) are quick to say that they ‘don’t patronize bodybuilding’ ‘aren’t really fans of the sport’ or ‘don’t follow it too closely’.  They seem very eager to distance themselves from the bodybuilding world.  For those of you whom do, why do you feel the need to do this?

There is an old guy at my gym I occasionally chat with when we are next to each other on the treadmill.  He has no idea who Flex Wheeler or Dorian Yates are; he goes to the gym and works out simply because he is interested in his own fitness.  Sure he knows who Arnold S. is, but he can legitimately say he is not a fan of bodybuilding.

But if you can name the Mr. O winner; if you come to getbig more than thrice; if you can name more than three BB mags or have picked up a bodybuilding magazine more than once in the last year you are a fan of bodybuilding.  There is no reason to deny this yet so many of you seem to want to; there are literally billions of web pages out there… yet this is where you have chosen to be.  A couple days ago a member here with more than 7836 posts to his credit asserted that "I DON'T patronize 'bodybuilding' per se" he was just here for entertainment.

There seems to be a strange love/hate relationship between bodybuilding and its many ‘fans’ who want to pretend like they are not really interested in the sport even as they repeatedly click their mouse button to get here, debate the merits of this or that bb's physique, spend money on shows, magazines, videos, etc.  Remember this guy who didn’t want to admit that he liked looking at Ronnie Coleman because he was afraid of what his friends would think? http://www.getbig.com/boards/index.php?topic=128181.msg2292381#msg2292381

It all seems so schizophrenic: insecurity brings so many men to the sport of bodybuilding, but it also prompts them to keep the sport at arms' length.  Are you ashamed of your interest of bodybuilding?  Ashamed of your hobby?  Ashamed of yourself?

What a surprise to see this fagget make another post trying to say that men are denial about stuff.

Look, what you do is disgusting. If people are slow to say they like bodybuilding it is because muscle worshippers like you make the sport look like it strictly for fags. Just because for you bodybuilding is simply about a way to get off and you sexulize the bodybuilders for your warped pleasure , it doesn't mean we all do.

You lower the tone of bodybuilding and take something noble and turn it into gay jerking material.

Feel free to send me hate mail via private message or email; I don't think anyone here is entertained by you.

You seem most eager to read and respond to someone you find so repulsive...  Perhaps you should google Ted Haggard.

IMO - it's a love hate thing. We like some parts of it, but others disgust us. Plus many come to the board as bigger 'fans', but after a while get jaded, but still enjoy the banter here. MOS has posted on that before, and made very valid points.

Er no. I would prefer to do what I did which is respond to a post you made -basically yet again trying to call men homosexuals becuase you can't understand that some of use bodybuilding as more than gay, jerking material.

I would only pm you to find pictures of gays or ask where I can find Barbara Streisand records. None appeal to me.

I wouldn't call myself a fan of it. I would say I'm a fan of Getbig and enjoy reading the site.

I go through huge spells where I have no idea who is winning what and where ..

I am not a fan of the turn it took in the early 90s. I don't like the look of the physiques and the descension into cabaret  - the stupid props and tacky stripperesque cowboy and gladiator costumes.

I think the physiques all look very false, bloated and unreal. They also seem to be more and more similar these days. There is less individuality. Everyone is bald and they seem to wear the scars of extreme drug abuse on their faces and bodies.

I also disagree totally with your personal definition of what constitutes a 'fan' of bodybuilding.

It seems that the some males on here can't get over their homophobia( musclemen oiled up in posing trunks)

I find the different shapes and sizes in Pro bodybuilding to very interesting.  I do have a love/hate relationship with it. I most definitely am a fan.    I have people ask me all the time how can I not think they are "too big".
For me personally, I liken bodybuilding to art.  The body is a beautiful machine.  It is amazing how one can transform themselves into so much muscle.  Veins popping, thighs bigger than my head, etc.
It makes me wonder how much they have to spend on clothing alone.  Watching the amount of food they eat is astonishing in itself.
I won't touch the drug use, I believe what one does that doesn't effect me directly is none of my business.

This love/hate dynamic really shows itself when it comes to female bodybuilding.

There are a few female BB that I notice and think look cool (Lenda Murray, Laura Crevalle) but for the most part it is not a sport I follow. I could not tell you who the current Ms. Olympia is for example.  For the most part I ignore female bodybuilding, but a lot of (insecure) guys on here seem to delight in denigrating female bodybuilders.  It makes perfect sense to limit your interest to figure or fitness competition if that is what you like, but I think paying so much attention to an activity that you claim to dislike is a mask for something else: your own insecurity? jealousy? envy? lust?

There are a lot of things in this world I don’t approve of, but I don’t spend my time announcing this over and over to anonymous people on a message board.  Those of you whom do this, are obviously much more interested in what you ostensibly abhor.

Bodybuilding inspired me to train and eat. Only pro I'm 'fan' of is Jay Cutler.
For me it's too extreme to really appreciate it, but some of the freaks look really cool.
To be a real fan of anything is kinda stupid - take some things of something that interests you and move on.

I have no doubt in my mind that the vast majority of those coming to Getbig are "fans" of bodybuilding.  The admittance of it though has to do with the stigma attached to it.  First of all you have the steroids issue that is so prevalent, then of course their is the sterotype of the brainless meathead, and lets not forget the general population's belief that your penis shrinks ::)

It would be like admitting to your gym buddies that you like opera or admitting to your girl you like to jack off, to you it may be the best thing since sliced bread but it is something best left unsaid.

I think doesn't like many people (except for Sean) because not many people like him.  It easy to see he has tried women and was unsuccessful with them so he tried men and failed at that too (but probably took longer).  So now he is left with just himself so he vents on this board.  Everyone knows he a sorry excuse for a human but like Goodrum he provides us with never ending entertainment.

it's kind of like the difference between being religious or spiritual and belonging to an organized religion.

I'm a fan of bodybuilding, a fan of competition bodybuilding, but I have no desire to give my hard earned money to any of the dominate organizations, magazines, or supplement companies running bodybuilding today.

I've never bought a bodybuilding mag or watched a show - nor do I want to.

I only came here because I've been banned from all the good boxing message boards. Getbig is where internet trolls go to die.

Definately a believer (or fan) of the positive outcomes of a
pure bodybuilding lifestyle. I agree that many initially train
to improve self esteem. Nothing wrong with that. You look and
feel better. It builds discipline for other areas of life and helps you
attract the opposite sex in my case. It will allow you to look younger
as you get older (unless too many drugs are used.)
As far as pro bodybuilding goes it doesn't get much better than Arnold
for extreme muscle mass while still retaining somewhat of an athletic look.
Even today, I still get excited around Mr. Olympia time and would pay
$29.95 to watch it on pay per view. That being said, until someone the caliber
of Arnold or Haney with todays supplements or someone equal to a prime
Coleman or Yates comes along;
the sport will not be as exciting as it used to be.
