People with long limbs
« on: May 15, 2008, 07:27:32 AM »
Any people with really long arms here ?

I noticed this morning, while doing half reps  (ok more 3/4 reps) for the first time of my life in pressing movements that it seems to stimulate MUCH more the muscle than complete reps.

I am talking pressing movements only

seems like the best for people with long arms, and it allows you to push much heavier weight too

what do you guys think

i have the same problem, i may have some mass on them but they appear to look skinny because its stredged out over a larger area, its fucking hard to make them look massive.

I remember reading an article about "point of flexion".  The article basically said that the effective ROM was actually much shorter than most people thought.  For example to work chest on the bench press you stopped just short of having the bottom of your upper arm parallel with the floor and at the top you would stop just short of lockout.  So basically a 1/2 to 3/4 rep.  I don't know if there's any truth to that theory.  Ummmmm...what the hell was this thread about and why did I just type that??????

Doing like 3/4 movement on the flat press(not bringing the bar all the way up) is actually better if you're got long arms because it spares your rotator cuff and elbow joints.

I don't think it's proper to do half reps, but reps similar to the way Ronnie Coleman does. He doesn't go all the way up on a lot of movements because he doesn't really need to.

I never do any flat presses tho, only inclines movements

I may do flat machine presses at the end of the workout but that's it.

usually when I did the incline press, I touched the upper-pec with the bar and then the rep was complete for me. Today I lowered to bar maybe around the chin level, the tension was much much better, chest was a lot more pumped and I could use much heavier weights

I'm 6'4 so I guess I have pretty long limbs.
It can be a hassle sometimes.

I feel that a complete rep is going all the way down, but not all the way up. Most strong lifters actually press like that and I find it to be better than a full ROM.

Yes, but when most people are doing like a flat bench press, at the top of the movement, they will roll up their shoulders and thereby take the focus off the chest at the top.

yes that's why you need your scapula contracted the whole time, even while squeezing your chest

Be carefull there tho, I only talk about upper-body pressing movements.

For any back movements, biceps or legs movements, one should use full reps.

especially for legs

especially for legs

for squats i bottom out..i knees click a lot but never hurt..
for leg presses i use a target range which helps me feel the eccentric the most
for back movements it depends on the weight...i start with full and move to target ranges
for bis i never fully extend..i actually think thats dangerous..

Mmm still i cant see the logical connection of half reps and long arm about muscle growth.....

range of motion, mangy potion....its all the same to me !

"half reps"  on chest seem to work best for me.

on back movements full ROM, but i sway at the hips to better target the back..    (people knock cutler and ronnies form on back movements but try it tou, it hits the lats so much more effectively)
