Do you workout for strength or shape?
« on: May 19, 2008, 07:18:28 AM »
It seems that here at getbig that those that do workout are split between the ones that want to look good and the ones that are obsessed about strength and size.

What's your workout goals?  having shredded abs or benching 400-500 pounds?

Unless you are planning a career as a furniture mover, of what use is extreme strength (beyond what an average regular weight trainer would achieve)?

Obviously I want some strength, but looks are somewhat more important.  You didn't mention health benefits, which are more important than either.

If you're interested in being a fighter, train for boxing or martial arts, not bodybuilding.  Most big meatheads can't fight for shit.

I want to gain strength (for drumming and lifting heavy items in the basement) but have always struggled to build any muscle

totally agree, i work out for health and looks.

strength comes with that to a certain degree, but actually i don't see a point in destroying my joints on the way to bench 400.

That is the deal, far better to do some quality reps with a decent wt on various joint friendly movements.

i would much prefer to train for size.  however the more I eat a bodybuilding diet, the more I stay small and get good shape.  I look bigger and better at 178 than I did at 215, but I sure feel skinnier.

This one dude would show up at my gym on saturdays only.  He was a totally obese guy.  Three chins, rolls on his legs but strong as hell.

He'd do three lifts, bench, deads and squats.

He's bench up to 5 plates a side, then do deads to 7 plates a side sumo style then do full squats up to 6 plates a side.  He was super strong but you wouldn't know it just thinking it was another fat obese guy.

Then on the flip side I see dudes with wicked shape, defined arms, shoulders etc... doing 35 pound curls and struggling.  I never understood how they can be in such shape but also being so week.

The one thing I never sacrifice is bad lifting form. I will do full reps, never lockout and never bouce or cheat the weights but then I see some bodybuilding dudes barely do a 1/2 rep with light weight and are just stacked and ripped.  Drugs and genetics have a huge role.

The wts are meant to be tools for bodybuilders. The strongman are to be respected for what they can do, but I have no desire to be one. I have been a powerlifter and think it is rather ideal to do both , and is possible , but that is pretty old school.

A bit of both to be honest - I'm more into the bulking side of things at the moment but my form is strict and I never go below 10 reps in any set.

Definitely benching squatting and dead lifting a shit load of weight...I would not mind looking like Marius Pudzinowski (except with bigger legs) in the process.

Health and looks.  Perhaps if I had a natural affinity for strength movements I might have changed my tune, but if anything, as I've gotten older, I've gone relatively lighter to achieve the results I've wanted (not that I was ever lifting all that heavy in relation to others every anyway).

Strength. I compete in PLing and I'm hoping to get into some Olympic lifting and strongman in the next few years. Then I'll take it from there  :)

Aiming at being strong but fat is pointless. Women dont care if you bench 200 or 400 if you are muscular and lean everyone will assume youre strong. Also, the average lifter already is stronger than most girls, so thats enough to impress them. :D

I tend to go in cycles depending on time of year...For the most part, I stay pretty clean( diet ) , do cardio, and lift heavy as hell year round. However, I'll pick out a date(such as a trip to see family) and spend 2 or 3 months hardcore dieting and really lean out. During this time, I stick with the big lifts, but am a lot weaker 8)
