Hawaii's average gas price tops $4 a gallon
B.J. Reyes
breyes@starbulletin.com

Hawaii's statewide average for regular unleaded gasoline hit $4 today as pump prices surged to record highs overnight both in the islands and across the country.
The statewide average of $4.005 a gallon was 3 cents higher than yesterday and 60 cents higher than this time a year ago, according to AAA's Fuel Gauge Report.

Prices also reached records in the three Hawaii metropolitan areas tracked by the auto club. In Honolulu, the average of $3.904 was 2 cents higher than the previous day. Motorists in Wailuku saw a 4-cent jump overnight to $4.326, while Hilo prices surged about 8 cents, to top the $4 mark for the first time at $4.055.

Maui was the first region of the country to hit $4 a gallon when it reached the threshold in March, according to AAA.

At Uptown Chevron in Wailuku where regular gasoline was selling for $4.37 a gallon yesterday, Kristian Nakamura said he's cut his driving in half and reduced his recreational fishing and surfing trips.

"I try to be certain there's surf," he said.

Hawaii's average was sixth-highest in the country behind Alaska ($4.181), Connecticut ($4.125), Illinois ($4.060), New York ($4.054) and California ($4.046). The nationwide average also set a record of $3.875 just as motorists mark the traditional start of the summer driving season this Memorial Day weekend. Prices are up nearly 20 percent, or 65 cents a gallon, over the past year.

Prices are driven by crude oil costs, which also have hit records this week, topping $130 a barrel.

Last time I filled up after it got to around $74 the pump slowed way down but didn't shut off.  I pumped it to $75 and reracked the pump.  When I started my car the tank wasn't even full  ???

Not a whole lot.  I fly more miles than I drive, but I still fill up about once a week, which costs me over $70 bucks now.  I have to buy super unleaded.  >:(  I'll be taking the bus when my kids get out of school and my chauffer duties are on hold a few months.

Paying an arm and a leg for gas in Houston is a little different than Honolulu.  You don't have state income tax, the cost of living is much lower, etc.  But I hear you get killed with property taxes.  We make up for low property taxes by taxing people up the wazoo for everything else.

Hahaha. I live in an expensive gas state, and my tank is full at a little more than $50. I won't even talk about the mileage I get.  Ok, I will. I get well over 300 miles from that $50.  And I do a lot of start and stop.

Edit: I did a little recalculation .... I might sometimes get more than 400 miles.  My tank's capacity varies, so I'm not sure.

I have to drive a pickup truck for work, luckily all my contracts are near my home, I know some other trades guys who are getting killed right now. Some of us don't have a choice and need trucks for work, you can't stuff all those tools into a Yaris.

On another note, it seems like every 10 years a whole group of people are having to reeducate themselves in another field to adapt to the changing times. Fortunalty it doesnt take that long to learn how to be a greeter at Walmart.

I'm near Sac, too.

But in my neighborhood, homes are now selling for MORE than the list prices.  Freakin' investors...

I am playing the world's smallest violin . . . .

Investors ruined the housing market here years ago.  During the "Japanese bubble" in the late 80s, investors came and paid homeowners two and three times the market value of their homes.  Ruined the market.  We just had another quasi-bubble a few years ago.  Really makes things harder for local families.

The market here is in shambles and the reality of the situation is that a family making even $100,000 a year still cannot safely afford a $400,000 home.

With all the available inventory, I don't see why *anyone* would pay more than list for a repo.

I'm probably still going to get one (3000 sf homes rent for $2000-2400/month), but I especially like this little ticky-tack I'm bidding on in Antioch - 1000 sf 2bd/1ba...last owner paid $380,000 in 2005 and comps are currently selling in the $110-140,000 range.  The renter is currently paying $1400/month.

Average price here has been around $650k.  New homes are around $800k.

I'm probably going to dip into the foreclosure market if and when the crisis hits us.   :-[

Youch, those are killer numbers.  Much of my neighborhood is hovering around the high 4s/low 5s, but we've got several foreclosures and short sales, some of which have reached the upper 3s.  In late '05/early '06, these same homes sold for $600-900,000...and where we live is considered 'down the hill'.  Poor country club residents...they've practically got Section 8 people moving in now!

That's terrible.  We've been shielded from the worst of the mainland housing crisis so far, but we always have our ups and downs in the housing market here.  I hope it ends soon (on the mainland).  Haven't read the new proposal working its way through Congress, so I'm not sure if that will help.
