Eight years ago this month, John McCain took the New Hampshire primary and was favored to win in South Carolina. Had he succeeded, he would likely have thwarted the presidential aspirations of George W. Bush and become the Republican nominee. But Bush strategist Karl Rove came to the rescue with a vicious smear tactic.

Rove invented a uniquely injurious fiction for his operatives to circulate via a phony poll. Voters were asked, "Would you be more or less likely to vote for John McCain...if you knew he had fathered an illegitimate black child?" This was no random slur. McCain was at the time campaigning with his dark-skinned daughter, Bridget, adopted from Bangladesh.
It worked. Owing largely to the Rove-orchestrated whispering campaign, Bush prevailed in South Carolina and secured the Republican nomination. The rest is history--specifically the tragic and blighted history of our young century. It worked in another way as well. Too shaken to defend himself, McCain emerged from the bruising episode less maverick reformer and more Manchurian candidate.

The former crusader against the Republican establishment has since turned into a Bush-hugging, business-as-usual politician who has backed down from many positions that set him apart from conventional conservatives. Before, McCain supported the separation of church and state; now he wants a Christian in the White House. The confederate flag, which he once considered an offensive symbol, no longer troubles him. And he has come to believe that tax cuts are a good idea.

I don't want to say that McCain sold his soul to the devil, since I believe that religious metaphors have no place in politics. But consider this: shortly after losing the 2000 election, McCain told an interviewer that there must be "a special place in hell" reserved for the rumormongers.

Seven years later, who is running McCain's South Carolina campaign? Charlie Condon, the former State Attorney General who in 2000 helped spread the innuendo targeting Bridget. If you can't beat them, hire them--even if they've launched racist attacks against your own daughter.

Bridget McCain was a seriously ill baby in Mother Teresa's orphanage when Cindy McCain visited and decided to bring her back to the United States for medical treatment in 1991. John and Cindy adopted her not long after. Now 16, Bridget learned of her role in the 2000 campaign only when she Googled herself. According to the New York Times, when McCain entered the current race, Bridget summoned his aides and asked them to pledge that this campaign would be different.

We can't know what reassurances were offered, but Condon doesn't seem to have repented for his role in the 2000 slander. He told the New York Times reporter that he wasn't surprised about the downward spiral of the Bush-McCain race. "Our primaries have a way of doing that," Condon said. "There is a tradition of it, it is accepted behavior, and frankly it works."

John McCain is now favored to win in South Carolina. The personal attacks of the 2000 election season, he recently told an interviewer, were "long ago and far away." "I had to get over it.... I don't ever think about them or dwell on them." Cindy McCain agrees. "We're past that. We've moved on."

The McCains may have moved on, but I haven't. Bush made a decisive step toward the White House by spreading lies about an 8-year-old child. (Not to mention a couple of decorated war veterans.) These vile tactics are not OK. If something similar were to happen in a high school election, those responsible would be suspended and black marks would be entered on their permanent records. But in politics, it seems, there's no such thing as a permanent record. Consequences do not exist--however blatant the misconduct.

It's time we changed that. In the 2008 election, voters need to send a message that attention is being paid--that this time liars and cheats will be defeated, not given a free hall pass.

RUSH: I gotta hear this again, Michael Pfleger, because I'm watching this at the top of the hour after I got off the phone with the climate specialist. I'm watching this guy and, you know, the congregation here at Reverend Wright's church, at Obama's church, this congregation is going more nuts for this guy than I ever seen 'em go nuts for Jerry Wright.  And I'm watching with Snerdley, and Snerdley says, "Yeah, traitors."  (laughter)  Traitors.  The congregation is cheering the white pastor more than the black pastor.  Anyway, here's Michael Pfleger.  This was visiting reverend, and this was last Sunday.

PFLEGER:  When Hillary was crying and people said that was put on, I really don't believe it was put on.  I really believe that she just always thought, "This is mine.  I'm Bill's wife. I'm white, and this is mine. I just gotta get up and step into the plate," and then out of nowhere came, "Hey, I'm Barack Obama," and she said, "Oh, damn!  Where did you come from?  I'm white!  I'm entitled!  There's a black man stealing my show!  Aaarrrgggh."  She wasn't the only one crying, there was a whole lot of white people crying.

RUSH:  (laughter) Listen to this guy! He sounds just like Jeremiah Wright.

WRIGHT:  Barack knows what it means to be a black man living in a country and a culture that is controlled by rich white people!  Hillary ain't never been called a black!  Bill did us just like he did Monica Lewinsky.  He was riding dirty.  In white America, US of KKKA, black men turning on black men.  I am sick of negroes who just do not get it.  Not God bless America, God (bleep) America.  It's in the Bible -- for killing innocent people.  God (bleep) America.  And now we are indignant because of stuff we have done overseas is now brought right back into our own front yards.  America's chickens coming home to roost.

RUSH:  That is the visiting Reverend Michael Pfleger at Obama's church this past Sunday.  If I am this church, I ask, "Are they trying to sink this guy?  Are they trying to sink Obama?"  For crying out loud, after all that has happened, do you think maybe they'd take the cameras out of there or at least shut them down and make sure that there are no audio recorders that the congregation can bring in there? You gotta stop and think about this. This is stupid!  Unless there's a plan here.  They must be out to sink Obama at this church, 'cause they know the whole world's watching. Well, that could be, too. Maybe they're just selfish. They're just trying to increase attendance and to hell with Obama.  The thing is, this Pfleger guy, he's right.  He stole that from me.  I didn't say it quite that way, but we all know that the Clintons sitting around, you know, shell shocked. "What happened to us?"  So anyway, after this, Obama went out there, and he said that he was deeply disappointed. (laughing) Hillary has now responded to Obama. 

Obama said he's "deeply disappointed" in the preacher.  Hillary is "disappointed" in Obama's response. (laughs) It's not even June yet, folks.  It's not even June.  We've got the bylaws committee tomorrow and the rules committee.  If I'm the Democrat Party, I'm looking at this, and I'm saying, "How can we do this?"  They have to know what lies ahead.  And, of course, there are these rumors circulating, and I don't know if this is true, but there are a number of people suggesting -- and I first heard this, by the way, when I was gone Monday and Tuesday of last week -- that there's a video and that the Republican Party supposedly has it now of Michelle Obama speaking from the pulpit in this church talking about "whitey."  I don't care if it's unacceptable, Snerdley. I'm just reporting what's out there.  I'm reporting on a rumor that is out there.  No, I cannot mention... (interruption)

Okay, forget I said "Michelle (My Belle) Obama." I'll just say "his wife."  Obama's wife is out there. There's a rumor that there's a tape -- the Republicans have it, and we're waiting to use it in October -- of Michelle going nuts in the church, too, talking about whitey this and whitey that.  You know, if I'm the Democrats are looking at this, I'm saying... They gotta know they're sitting on top of a powder keg here, and somebody in this party -- Howard Dean or somebody -- has gotta send somebody up to this church and say, "Well, you people take the next five months off, or move this congregation somewhere? Move it to Reverend Wright's house -- it's in a gated community -- so nobody can know what you're doing in there. Just give us five months, will you, and shut up!" You know, the Clintons are -- make no mistake about it -- making hay out of this, as they lobby the rules committee and so forth.

Dont you think she owed it to 18,000,000 voters to go to the very end.....everyday she was meeting people telling her not to give up.   If she threw in the towell it could have come back later.


BTW.   The country was peaceful with the clintons. people had homes, cars ,food, and gas was .99cents or less.
Wish we could say that now but its gonna get way worse than it is now.....
