Racist Loudmouth POS in the Gym: What could I have done?

I never imagined I would find this shit at my university gym, but it happened today.

While I was working out, these two other guys were carrying on a conversation, about the army (one of them is a marine, apparently), politics, etc... One of them started to get loud while talking politics, ranting about how much he hates Obama.

It was loud and obnoxious, and it escalated to him calling Obama "That Muslim Ni gger" and saying that no way will white Americans vote for a Muslim "Ni gger" guy to be president, and the like. This went on for several minutes.

In the meantime, I tried to finish my workout and resist the urge to throw a 75-lbs dumbbell at that POS. My disapproving stare-down and look of disgust eventually made him come up to me and apologize... but it was just a half-apology, since he coated it in excuses like "I just hate liberals so much"...

I accepted his apology. I didn't want to report him to the kids in charge of the gym, because I didn't want to look like a snitch. But I also feel guilty about not having stood up to him.

What should/could I have done? Serious thread, please help folks!

#1 - You're not OBAMA, why were you offended? 

#2 - You were only using 75 pound dumbbells for your heavy set?  WEAK.

I'd ask him what he thinks about the economy and the war.

I'd ask him about oil prices, gas prices, and the borrowing.

I'd explain the PROBLEMS to him, without talking about any candidates.

Then I'd explain the position of both candidates on all these issues.

I'd never ask him who he preferred, or shown any preference of my own.

Just the facts.  And walk away from him.

All jokes aside, that dude seems like a dumb hick to me. I wouldn't let something like that get to me, although I'd still be angry because it's people like that voted Bush into office without giving any thought to policy; rather voting out of fear.

I will give you more I recently used. One ol'redneck was NOT as bad as the POS mentioned in the thread, but he was anti Obama and did admit it was mostly due to him being black as he voted for Hillary in the primary.
I then asked him if he was against afirmative action ? He said he hated that and that blacks should never get a edge just for being black. I smiled and said, well, isn't the main reason you won't vote for Obama due to his race?

Had that happen to me once. I just said 'Aren't you gonna be late to your cross-burning?' A little sarcasm and a wearying glance let him know what he said was out of line and he moved off. I also did not use any threatening tone or body-language.

Sure.  The solutions would be to look at the troubled areas, and look at the positions of each candidate, and choose the candidate that you believe will fix it.  Easy enough.

Actually, it's not a conspiracy.  Five of the ten authors of the 911 commission report, having seen all the news that has come out since 2004, now want another investigation.  They call their own report uncomplete, flawed.  One even called it a 'whitewash'.
